What happened to Smith being better than Cam Newton? Funny how you ignored that.

Coming off last season and heading into this one Alex Smith is around16th if we look at what it takes to be an NFL QB. Don't care about 2010 and before, that means nothing,
The stats I've posted are last season's, not 2010's....

Newton is already producing better than Alex Smith did in his best season ever..... because Newton's a double threat QB, you can't just look at his passing stats (which are great for a rookie QB).... he led all quarterbacks in rushing DYAR and effective rushing yards.... he also single-handedly improved Carolina's offense from the least efficient in the league in 2010 to the 4th-most efficient offense in 2011, in his rookie year.....

The advanced stats are even harsher on Smith.... team offensive DVOA shows that Alex Smith led a San Francisco offense that was only 18th in efficiency... Mark freaking Sanchez threw for almost as many effective yards as Smith last year... Smith was 13th in DYAR and 14th in DVOA.... again, in his best year to date, Smith led an inefficient offense and was inefficient himself..... considering that the rest of his career has been , there really is no argument for Smith being in the top 16 quarterbacks in this league....
    Totally disagree.

I'm not talking about career, I'm talking about right now.

Look at the now. Competion %, lack of INT's, rating. He is without question 16th or so.

Are you re ed? Those stats I posted are from the 2011-12 season alone, not his whole career....

Even if you're only going to judge on last season, which just so happens to be Smith's best season ever, he is STILL a mediocre, inefficient QB who leads an inefficient offense.... he is NOT a good starting QB, case closed....

Bottom line: if you are inefficient and barely mediocre at your absolute pinnacle performance, and utter the rest of your time, you aren't good... period...

Re ed is talking about how it take years, then putting Newton above Smith, that's ing re ed. As you continue to stay far far away from it knowing you totally ed that up, that's re ed!!!!!!!

    paste..

Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski is conducting an ongoing segment in which he ranks his top 30. On Monday, "Jaws" named San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith his 16th best quarterback in the league. This ranking officially made Smith the top quarterback for NFC West passers (Sam Bradford - 20th, Kevin Kolb - 25th and Matt Flynn - 27th), according to Jaworski.

I think he knows a little more about this as I do. You got owned once again, don't you get tired of being a speedbump?

Damn I'd hate to be you.

    Meltdown

What did Marino do coming into the league? 64.2% completion percentage, 5,084 yards, 48 touchdowns, 108.9 rating in his second season...

Elway's rookie year was garbage but he has 14 elite seasons and 2 rings to make up for it....

Both QB's early years shat on Smith's, but neither could be crowned as greats until they had proven themselves over multiple years..... flukes come and go, but greats stay on top for a very long time...

Smith has yet to even approach Marino's stats or Elway's success in 8 years.... comparing him to those two is a joke.....

BTW, question for you, Welchvante: if it only takes one good season to be considered a good QB, how come Trent Dilfer, Joe Namath, or Mark Rypien aren't considered all-time greats?

I know I said it takes years to be recognized a great NFL QB. I was wrong as you showed.

I keep forgetting you are talking about the here and now, but I still know than Ron Jaworski, what's he know about NFL QBing?

You are re ed..... many QB's have one or two good years, only a few can be great for 10-15 years.... Alex Smith has been barely mediocre ONCE in eight years and garbage in the other seven....

I was wondering how long it would take for you to bring up the having to constantly learn new systems excuse....

Firstly... we're only going off last year by your criteria, so any systems from before 2011 should be irrelevant to you....

Secondly... you know who else has played under several different offensive coordinators in his career? TOM BRADY...

    Are you really brain dead?

    I'll go really really slow...

You were the one talking about pre 2011 not me. I was explaining to you why he might have struggled. You honestly didn't pick up on that I don;t care about anything priior to 2011, you did.

Alex Smith is no Tom Brady, how many are?

    Is this little for real?

No, Alex Smith struggled because he's a suck-ass quarterback.... good quarterbacks find a way to succeed even in crappy systems (see the numbers Rivers has been putting up the past few years in Norv Turner's fetal position offense)...

Are you paying any attention at all? Nobody is saying Alex Smith is anything other than a middle of the pack talent. You consider...16th..as being great? no he's not on a level with the elite I never said he was dummy. I see him right there in the middle.

The thing is; if that defense replicates what it did last year he doesn't have to be great/good. He is a tad bit mediocre because he still made big plays when it counted. I would rather have Alex Smith than Brady Quinn or Colt McCoy. He just has much, much, better weaponry around him he doesn't have to go all out and get 5k yards, 30+ touchdowns, 60%+ completion rate, or a QB rating of 95--just don't it up. Hand the ball of to Gore and throw the ball to Davis, James, or Manningham and let them pick up the YAC.

    Let's go with passer rating

    1.Rodgers...122.5
    2.Brees..110.6
    3.Brady..105.9
    4.Romo...102.5
    5.Stafford..97.2
    6.Shaub...96.8
    7.Manning..92.9
    8.Ryan..92.2
    9.Smith...90.7

    Big Ben, Rivers, Newton, Flacco..below.

His 61.3 completion % puts him at 10th.

    9th...passer ranking
    1st...lowest INT%
    10th..completion %
16th..ranked by a guy getting paid to rank this guys and played QB himself.
16th..ranked by a guy who has seen every QB since 1962.

Let me guess, you don't get it.
