The stats I've posted are last season's, not 2010's....
Newton is already producing better than Alex Smith did in his best season ever..... because Newton's a double threat QB, you can't just look at his passing stats (which are great for a rookie QB).... he led all quarterbacks in rushing DYAR and effective rushing yards.... he also single-handedly improved Carolina's offense from the least efficient in the league in 2010 to the 4th-most efficient offense in 2011, in his rookie year.....

Even if you're only going to judge on last season, which just so happens to be Smith's best season ever, he is STILL a mediocre, inefficient QB who leads an inefficient offense.... he is NOT a good starting QB, case closed....
Bottom line: if you are inefficient and barely mediocre at your absolute pinnacle performance, and utter the rest of your time, you aren't good... period...

On Monday, "Jaws" named San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith his 16th best quarterback in the league. This ranking officially made Smith the top quarterback for NFC West passers (Sam Bradford - 20th, Kevin Kolb - 25th and Matt Flynn - 27th), according to Jaworski.

What did Marino do coming into the league? 64.2% completion percentage, 5,084 yards, 48 touchdowns, 108.9 rating in his second season...
Elway's rookie year was garbage but he has 14 elite seasons and 2 rings to make up for it....
Both QB's early years shat on Smith's, but neither could be crowned as greats until they had proven themselves over multiple years..... flukes come and go, but greats stay on top for a very long time...
Smith has yet to even approach Marino's stats or Elway's success in 8 years.... comparing him to those two is a joke.....
BTW, question for you, Welchvante: if it only takes one good season to be considered a good QB, how come Trent Dilfer, Joe Namath, or Mark Rypien aren't considered all-time greats?

No, Alex Smith struggled because he's a suck-ass quarterback.... good quarterbacks find a way to succeed even in crappy systems (see the numbers Rivers has been putting up the past few years in Norv Turner's fetal position offense)...
Are you paying any attention at all? Nobody is saying Alex Smith is anything other than a middle of the pack talent. You consider...16th..as being great? no he's not on a level with the elite I never said he was dummy. I see him right there in the middle.

Except Smith isn't a good quarterback, even going off last year's stats... mediocre at best....
The thing is; if that defense replicates what it did last year he doesn't have to be great/good. He is a tad bit mediocre because he still made big plays when it counted. I would rather have Alex Smith than Brady Quinn or Colt McCoy. He just has much, much, better weaponry around him he doesn't have to go all out and get 5k yards, 30+ touchdowns, 60%+ completion rate, or a QB rating of 95--just don't it up. Hand the ball of to Gore and throw the ball to Davis, James, or Manningham and let them pick up the YAC.
