errr... I'm on the same side of the gun control argument as you are, but this isn't accurate. It varies so much from state to state, that there isn't a way to make an even semi-accurate generalized statement on the process to obtain a gun legally. Not only does it vary by state, it also varies depending on the type of firearm.
I have a few handguns, rifles and shotguns. The process for the first handgun I bought (at 21 years old) consisted of a short application and a 10 minute computer background check. I just browsed the store while they did the check.
