I'm not for drug control (total ban) by any means. But banning drugs would presumably make it tougher for them to be obtained illegally as there would be less drugs on the street.

You really don't get it, do you? To purchase a gun, any civilian has to go through a long, involved process that varies depending on state (usually involves an interview process and an application) and they can't operate said gun without a license....

Now we have no idea whether the shooter went through this process or not, but if he didn't, then stricter gun laws would not have prevented this tragedy....
errr... I'm on the same side of the gun control argument as you are, but this isn't accurate. It varies so much from state to state, that there isn't a way to make an even semi-accurate generalized statement on the process to obtain a gun legally. Not only does it vary by state, it also varies depending on the type of firearm.

I have a few handguns, rifles and shotguns. The process for the first handgun I bought (at 21 years old) consisted of a short application and a 10 minute computer background check. I just browsed the store while they did the check.

All of them as soon as they were used in a crime.
so all of those guns are now illegal to purchase?

    probably not.

Again, maybe states should take a long hard look at the process they require prospective gun owners to go through tbh, but banning guns entirely across the board does not end gun crime (see: Britain) and prevents law-abiding people from excercising their cons utional right....

    Killed 13 in 2009.

A number of items were found on Wong's body, including a hunting knife, in the waistband of his pants;[13] a bag of ammunition, which was tied around his neck;[27] and two semi-automatic pistols (a .45-caliber Beretta Px4 Storm and a 9mm Beretta, matching the serial numbers on his New York State pistol license).[

Those particular ones are. They are considered evidence and are in lockup.

It's still legal to purchase ammonium nitrate and nitromethane, despite the OKC bombing. I think Ryder trucks can still be rented as well.

So making the OKC bomb from fertilizer and buying a gun are just as easy?

The drug control argument is just bad. You don't think that it would be substantially easier to get drugs if they were legal?

If you could go to Planet K right now, and all they had to do was get your name and do a quick background check (to make sure you aren't allergic or something) that would be easier. Then you might have pot delivery businesses pop up, maybe a joint venture with dominoes (2 large two topping pizzas for $5.99 each with your purchase of a quarter!).

    The story

Five people were killed Thursday after a man tried to attack the Dutch royal family during a Queen's Day celebration by crashing his car near the royal family's bus, Dutch police said.

The man had a LEGAL license to drive.

It's a difficult argument either way. To what degree do you deny the rights of law-abiding people to prevent the possibility of them doing something illegal? You could also be preventing law-abiding people from protecting themselves.

Conclusions form gun restrictions in UK are "murky" at best. Incidents are slightly up while deaths are down.

Sure (not SUBSTANTIALLY easier though), but legalizing at least marijuana would also take a load of customers away from the black market by providing a safe, legal, convenient option to people who either need it for medicinal purposes or will just use it anyway tbh....

Substantially? No. A person who goes through background checks and gets police chief permission to carry a firearm hasn't done so easily, and even that person can tweak off. Box cutters caused the deaths of 3000 people in the US and over a million world wide because of the hijackings of 9/11, yet I can still buy a box cutter at Home Depot and no one even cowers when I do.

If you could go to Planet K right now, and all they had to do was get your name and do a quick background check (to make sure you aren't allergic or something) that would be easier. With the fines and punishment tied to possession, people still do it in big numbers. It's a banned substance.

The gun control argument has been defeated long ago, which is why even the liberals won't touch it.

You do realize that gun crimes that don't result in deaths are still very bad for society, right? The fact that incidents went up regardless of their outcome shows that banning handguns don't deter criminals from getting them and using them for a variety of criminal acts, tbh......

This is actually the way I feel. I am conflicted on this issue, at best. I trend toward being a gun control advocate, but I can see both sides. I would probably be completely satisfied with making it incredibly hard to get a gun, maybe banning certain types of guns but not banning guns outright.

A gun is infinitely more lethal than a car.

Dude couldnt have killed 13 and wound 30 in the theater with his CAR, could he?

And a car has a practical purpose besides killing people.

    Try again.

You take away the guns they go to knives, you take those away they go to home made bombs.

Crazy finds a way to be crazy. These utopian arguments of "if we ban em everything will be fine" have never held water and have always hurt more legal law abiders than the criminals.

So does a gun: self-defense... (also, hunting, depending on the type of gun...)
