While I think it's true that people can serve their country in different ways, saying that they've "served missions" is a step too far.
"Serving a mission" is what it is called in the Mormon church. WTF else is she supposed to call it?

The polls seem to be getting the Obamabots panicked. All this making hay out of every irrelevant comment by anyone near the Romney campaign looks desperate.

Is it? *shrug* I'm not really familiar with the Mormon church. If that's the case, comment partially rescinded. I still think it's a conflation of meanings... the "missions" of a Mormon representatives aren't usually what people think of when they hear the word mission.

While I understand the term missionary, I don't think I've ever actually heard someone refer to what they do as "missions". I've heard them say things like, "It's my mission to do this for God", but in a way that was interchangeable with other tersm like duty, calling, etc etc. *shrug* As I said in the OP, not a big deal either way.

As much as I dislike Obama, it's like this that makes me loathe Romney and the party he represents.

It's called separation of church and state/ Proselytizing and military service are not comparable in the same way that being a salesman and a cop are not comparable.

And that's no : Mormon missionary work is OJT for sales. If you are in frontline sales and you get a Mormon fresh off of their mission applying then you had best hire them in a heartbeat. That is exactly what they have been doing for two years: selling Mormonism door to door.

But to say that door to door religion sales is analogous to military service is offensive on several fronts. First one is serving your country and the other is pushing a fairy tale. Second, a mormon missionary sent to subsaharan africa might have some scary moments every month or so but compare that to some grunt recon in afghanistan or hazardous duty.

It's not so much that they are cowards. I cannot speak to that but it does speak to how completely out of touch with reality they are. Mission work in france for the church is nothing like US military service in afghanistan. It's just not and it's insulting to suggest it is.

The church sets up a mission, the people (missionaries) serve that mission. This isn't exactly new stuff.

Yes, and the "mission" of Dunkin Donuts is to serve donuts and coffee to make a profit, but I wouldn't say most people equate Dunkin Donut's "mission" or "mission statement" with the missions carried out by the military. Trying to say the two are equal is disgenuous in my eyes. But then again, I'm an atheist soldier, so that might be my hangup

It's just semantics mang. When a mormon turns 18 and is sent out for door to food LDS sales they call it their 'mission.'

How is this a bigotryfest? No one has talked down the Mormon church at all. We're just discussing the semantics between military mission and other kinds of missions, and whether it's acceptable (for lack of a better word) to conflate the two.

Finding our way to mutual respect is gonna take a lot of work. Maybe one day the children of the future will learn from the futility of vulgar language, ignorance and intolerance. Funny how the far left has more in common with the far right than with the rest of us.

Translation: I have no clue if something is true but I want it to be so I will believe it to be anyway.

It's the WC way. That sciam article I OPed the other day was talking about people just like you. Thanks for making this country more ignorant!
