EDIT: Just in case you misunderstood what I was trying to say, I'll try to be nice about it and explain: The announcers will say "The Magic has to win this game" or "The Heat plays the best defense in the league." It's minorly annoying. It's the only objection I have to your otherwise good idea.

New Orleans Pellet Guns is pretty damn bad when New Orleans Krewe was on the table.
Maybe call them the P'cans or Dirty Birds or some ish.
Bullets was actually the most appropriate nickname in all of organized sports anywhere in the world.
No worst than Lakers, Clippers, UTAH Jazz, Magic, Texans, Mighty Ducks, Trolly Dodgers, Kinckerbockers, Athletics, and of course the worst the REDSKINS

Yeah the first time I heard Texans I. The Magic I understand because of the "Magic Kingdom" that is Disney World.
New team names suck these days. Its either pick an animal that is really stupid or overused, pick an inanimate object or idea, or come up with something that makes absolutely no damn sense what so ever. Pelicans is not that bad. It has nothing to do with heat or weather. It is not some term or phrase meant to sound "cool" which will be completely dated in a few years. It is not completely overused animal that is popular in college, high-school, junior high and elementary sports....Bobcats anyone?
I can think of a lot worse.

EDIT: oh yeah, and finally it is not based of the popularity of a movie in the 90's based on dinosaurs.
Raptors also covers predator birds like Seahawks, Eagles, Owls, etc... So thats a steal. If a team just named themselves mammals, well that would be a total coupe but horribly unpopular.
That is because most of all the good names are already taken.
Pelicans have webbed feet for swimming. They don't catch prey(fish) with their feet so they don't have large talons.

Is that a mockup or the official? If it's real I could get behind that. Bold, distinct color scheme. Managed to make the bird look tough. Could be shortened to "Pels" in casual conversation.

When I got the image, it was labeled 'leaked official'... plus it meets the color scheme of the owner's wife so it very well could be what they use.
I'm somewhat jealous that other teams can do so much with their logos but we simply refuse not to. (although I'm not jealous of other team's success compared to ours.. We legit! Lol)

Pelicans sounds pretty stupid at first, but it's already growing on me. That logo is nice.
