Baynes needs an offseason to work into the system, get stronger and learn his role with the team but he looks like he genuinely wants to be there and is trying to earn that spot. As for Joseph, keep working him when you can but as far as him having a big role in the playoffs I don't see it happening. The kid is young though, lots of potential and has had a lot of time to learn the system, he'll get his chance and he'll be successful when he does.

First year for Nando so there is still that foreign learning curve, he's much better when he's creating but like mentioned above he's usually out there with Manu. Just hope that we get a dose of some true PG's rather than questionable Gary Neal dribbling into corner, dribbling off his foot or taking bad forced shots.
Baynes get stronger? Think he is strong enough

I'm not sure why most people on this forum say that Mills has been inconsistent. He's had much less time to showcase himself on the court due to most of the backup minutes going to De Colo the last few weeks. When he does play though, he gets a positive +/-, which is what the point of basketball is--to outscore the other team. All of the play making and "real point guard duties" are done by Manu, so all Patty has to do is get open for jumpshots, something that he does well.
Mills got a shot to get the backup PG in November and he wasn't convincing. After that first month, it's true that most of the backup PG minutes went to De Colo or Neal in the few games where everyone was healthy. Should Mills get another shot? That's debatable...

De Colo's a great back up point guard IF he has the ball in his hands and is the one that initiates the plays. Unfortunately for him, Manu also needs the ball in his hands when he's on the court, which forces De Colo to play a spot up shooter role. This being his first season, I don't think he has the confidence (yet) to consistently knock down threes or wide open jump shots in the playoffs.
I don't know how you can say that Manu forces the PG to play a spot up shooter role while he has been paired successfully for a decade with Parker that isn't at all a spot up shooter.

Ginobili playmaking skills can help a PG with weaknesses in that area like Mills, Neal or before them Hill. However, it's not because has these skills that he can't play alongside a playmaker. With Manu aging, it's might be even be better for him to be paired with a player that can help to create plays.

I'm not sold on De Colo at PG but it's mostly because of a lack of quickness and the fact that he turns the ball way too much at that spot. A potential misfits with Manu is nowhere near being a top issue for me.

I'm all for Cojo getting a chance, but isn't it a bit too late into the season to begin experimenting with someone who hasn't been with the team for the majority of the season so far?
Even if it's likely too late, it's worth the try because Joseph can be so much better defensively than Mills/De Colo/Neal.

Thanks for the response, Bruno. Maybe it's true that Manu having the ball in his hands for the majority of a possession doesn't always force the point guard to be a spot up shooter, as in Parker's case, but that's not what I, myself, see when De-Colo and Manu share the floor. When Manu's dribbling the ball (and playing the role of the play maker), De Colo just hangs out at the three point line with his hands in the "catch and shoot" position. Isn't that we define as a spot-up shooter? I found that De Colo is much more effective when he's running the show himself.

I don't think we can compare De Colo to Parker at all. Parker has the ability to drive it in and lay it up at will. He also has a great mid range jumper that he can consistently rely on. The point is, Parker can set up plays for himself. I don't think De Colo is at a stage where he can do this yet, hence why he isn't effective at all, according to the pairing statistics on timvp's thread, when paired with Manu.

Pop's most reliable backup guard come playoff time will probably end up being Gary Neal again. He's the only backup guard who's been given a spot in the regular rotation on a consistent basis.

Baynes with 12 of 16 pts in the 4th quarter while playing with 5 fouls; helped the Toros finally take the lead. Left hook has been one of his go to moves and had a nice left handed block.
I only watched the 1st half, but the Toros backcourt option are ugly. Baynes was just standing there hoping for a lay-up miss to catch the rebound, not much play calling.
The defense is so soft that Baynes ends up standing there waiting for a guy whos running for a dunk starting at the 3pts line, no one stops him and Baynes add fouls.

+/- stats for De Colo are just really bad:
Spurs without De Colo (2266 minutes): +493
Spurs with De Colo (601 minutes): -7

This is the kind of stat that should push Pop to kick De Colo out of the rotation for the rest of the season. De Colo's rookie season hasn't been all bad and he should be better as a sop re but this year might just not be his.

Now, a little stat to help your "Free Mills" campaign:
The best NBA pair this year (minimum 100 minutes played together) is Mills/Ginobili with a +30.5 points scored per 100 possessions: http://bkref.com/tiny/7ZwxC

joseph has earned a shot at backup PG, if not for his own merit, by the inconsistent play of mills and de colo at least.

Baynes is failing the eye test. Better to go sharpen his skills against D League scrubs.
Are you serious? Baynes passes the eyeball test with flying colors. Hes huge, has deceptive athleticism, has nice form on his jumper and already shows a knack for rebounding and blocking shots from time to time. What he needs is time to adapt and learn the system. But hes definitely passing the eyeball test.

Next season he has a nice chance at being a nice rotation player.

This is so 'effing stupid on so many levels.... Pop adding yet more confusion and chaos to an already chaotic situation. And i guess we can all expect plenty of bonner and blair this playoffs. Spurs will be eliminated in 1st or 2nd round and sad thing is this team had potential to win it all handily.

    lol TJ mad.

There's a good chance both Baynes and Joseph would stay assigned had the injuries not occurred.

his best game was against the worst team in the league. He's slow in the NBA. He fouls half the time he sets a pick. His few low post touches have resulted in awkward shots. His big, but hasn't shown he knows how to use his size to own the boards. At least that's my opinion. Obviously it's his first year in the league and he came here midseason, so he can improve. But I don't see why he shouldn't be wearing a suit during the playoffs.

Liked what I saw out of Cojo tonight. You can tell just how much he's improved in one year. Defense was always there, but his jump shot has improved by leaps and bounds.
