I hope the Mavs do sign Big Al because that would eat all there remaining cap space. And it would mean that the Spurs would be the only contending team that could offer AK the full MLE and you really can't even call the Mavs a contending team at this point. There are some crappy teams with cap to sign him to a larger deal, but that would basically defeat his purpose of opting out to go to a contending team.
Another reason why getting the Splitter deal done so early was important. With Paul off the market and Howard unlikely to choose Dallas, you know that Cuban is going to seriously overpay someone.
