I expected both Gary Neal and the Spurs organization to move on from each other, and so they apparently have. But let me say this:
Gary came into camp a few years ago, and nobody knew who he was. Just another former college player looking to make it big after a few years oversees.
He came, he played, he conquered. The Spurs signed him for pennies on the dollar.
This man was never the most talented on the floor, but he came out every night with the biggest heart of anyone.
He never complained. He was never a distraction. He never pretended to be something he wasn't. He was just Gary Neal.
People tried (and failed) to compare him to Roger Mason Jr. This kid was ice cold. Had bigger onions than most players making millions.
So here we are... 3 years later. One incredible game saving shot to keep a series alive. One amazing 3 PT onslaught to help secure a win in the finals.
He was never expected to amount to anything, but he is a warrior. He is the example of a dream come true for many young NBA fans all over the world.
So say what you want about him. We can go over his deficiencies on defense. We can analyze his propensity for wild shots. Or...
We can simply be satisfied with an incredible shooter who fell into our laps, all the while earning what amounts to about $2M over 3 years.
God bless you Gary, and good luck in the future.
