that's what I'm saying... he was used the wrong way his first go around. he went from being the primary scorer to the 5th option... you guys dont remember all of the praise he was getting his 2nd year and how much more comfortable he looked? put him on the bench and let him run the 2nd team, give him all of the touches. LOL u guys already forgot that we TRADED AWAY SEAN + AVERY + BARRY right? it's not the first time we've traded guys, only to have them come back.
I actually disagree with the sentiment that we should just give him the keys to the second unit though. I just don't think he has that skill set anymore to create. I'm nnot sure what happened but he really lost his ability to create during his tenure here. He'd still have some great size, decent defense, and solid shooting to add though

We we got RJ, we went backwards. Got swept by the suns, upset by memphis, had a meltdown against okc.

After we got rid of him we went straight back to the finals the following season.

    let's sink that in.

We made progress going back to the finals after getting rid of his ass and you want us to back pedal again? you

It wasn't RJ that caused that. It was Pop's attempt to try to become the San Antonio Suns. His finally going back to defense is what got us back to the Finals. Getting RJ was part of the Spurs change in philosophy at the time that they needed to outscore people more than play better defense. If we hadn't tried going the offense route we would have probably gone after a guy like Shane Battier and returned to the Finals sooner.

Sure, give a guy who helped the Spurs win Game 1 of the WCSF while playing for the opposing team all the touches.

The Barry trade was a nudge nudge, wink wink deal by the Spurs and Sonics. Seattle had no intention of keeping him, and the Spurs were planning on getting him back all along. Totally different situation from what happened with Elliott and Johnson.
i hope you realize that's illegal right? the timberwolves if im not mistaken gone fined heavily for the joe smith scandal and had to give up draft picks

Different situation entirely. The Joe Smith scandal was a free-agent situation and did not involve any trades.

The Barry trade situation was a loophole that got closed off in the latest CBA by preventing a player from resigning with the team that traded him until 12 months have passed or his deal runs out and July 1 comes around (whichever occurs sooner). Antonio McDyess got traded from Detroit to Denver, waived, and returned to Detroit back in 08 in a similar deal, so the opportunity was always there before the latest CBA.

Next time, have a clue about what you're talking about before you spout off. Thanks.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing him, always liked RJ
YOUR ALONE....... Go see him, we don't want to see him again here unless it is missing FT's to help us win a playoff game.

I agree but we had Jax against OKC and almost single handidly saved us in that game 6! If we have RJ we don't even make it that far IMO last year. This year you are right again, we got even further without him! When he was here it was either first round or second round at the most, he sucked.

Losing to the Suns in a sweep and getting pounced by Memphis had nothing to do with Richard Jefferson, the Spurs finally started playing better in 2012 and got beat in the WCF by OKC (it seems after game 2 the Thunder couldn't miss a shot). It's all about playing your ass off, emergence of certain Spurs role players, playing great D, smart basketball, etc, they did that in 2013 and that is why the made it to the NBA Finals which also resulted in a loss unfortunately. If the Spurs want to win the NBA le in 2014 it will take an even more herculean effort to get back there and finally do it. That is why in a sense losing to Miami bites because they came so close and played championship basketball those playoffs and it's never easy, it took them 6 years to get back there. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be motivated next season to win it all, they almost did against Miami, they have to feel confident if the whole team can stay healthy.

I'm just thinking about all of the guys we used to have that could step in and play right now. RJ knows the system, and if we bring in a new guy, it will take the new guy at least 1 year to learn the system and the year will be a wash. 2014 could be Duncan and Manu's last years...

I'm convinced that half the people in this thread didn't watch spurs basketball in the Richard jefferson era.

This guy was indefensible. Everyone knows he's a bottom-tier defender in the NBA. Nothing will change that at this point in his career. He was absolutely a huge reason the spurs lost early in the playoffs every year he was with us.

Initially, it seemed he had promise on offense. Every year, he came out of the gate shooting lights out, giving spurfans hope, but every year he was stone cold by March and couldn't make a shot in the playoffs.

THANK GOD the Spurs are not even rumored to be interested in this guy! He will never be in the Spurs uni again, rightfully so. I still can't believe you want this guy in a Spurs uni again when even when he was not on the team last year he was our ally missing key FT's against us in that game one to turn the momentum!
