In fact, where the team has actually improved its production is on the other end of the floor. Since Kobe’s departure the team has held their their opponents to a staunch 84 points a game!! Now, astute Laker fans will tell you that despite his position on the all-defense team Kobe has been less than perfect on that end of the court over the last few seasons, often favoring leaving his defensive assignment to double team the ball, which will create turnovers but also leads to cuts and back screens or open jumpers. He also tends to avoid extending his defense past 18 feet, so often opposing guards can find themselves with open three pointers.

Watching all three of those games, it seemed obvious to me that the improvements in defense flowed largely from Gasol and to a lesser degree, Odom. Pau had 19 rebounds and 5 blocks against both the Spurs and Jazz, and unless you think Kobe would have been defending the post, screening Gasol off the ball and preventing him from swatting at the ball and attempting to grab rebounds, his impact on Gasol’s numbers on that end is minimal.

Moreover, in his first four Finals appearances with the Lakers and Shaq, Kobe’s performance declined from 25 points per game while shooting 46% from the field during regular season, to 22.4 points per game and 41% in the finals– including the year 2000 when Kobe averaged a measly 15.6 points per game in the finals on a horrendous 36% from the field in the finals.

Kobe had a worst supporting cast and they made the playoffs. Gasol's currently leading the Lakers to a lottery pick.

    Please proceed.

In 2008-2010 with Pau Gasol, Kobe’s efficiency in the Finals also declined. Although he averaged one point higher in the Finals compared to the regular season, he scored by heaving away at the bucket profligately, as his field goal percentage dropped from 46% in the regular season to 41.3% in the Finals. Kobe’s poor shooting earned him a couple records: only NBA Finals MVP not to have a single game shooting above 50% (he accomplished this in both 2009 and 2010), and the worst shooting percentage by any NBA Finals MVP in history (40%); also, most missed shots in a playoff series as well as most missed shots in a Finals series. Many argue that Kobe is the greatest of all time, but that is complete amplification. Kobe is the greatest sidekick of all time.
