If the city pisses off the Spurs enough for them to leave town, the city deserves it tbh. The franchise has been pretty god damn loyal to San Antonio and has never really asked for much.
They asked for an arena lol. That's a lot.

There is just a stupid amount of money rolling around up here. A lot of things would have to happen in both cities, but a new arena is going to be build here probably just around the time the ATT Center lease runs out. It doesn't take much imagination to see what could possibly happen.
That is true, there is a lot of money and activity in Austin, so I'm sure they're eyeballing a professional team. I think with all the hipsters in Austin, a MLS team would probably do well. But I wouldn't be shocked if they're wanting a piece of the Spurs. In the end it will come down to location, help from the government etc....like usual. But it wouldn't be bad, it would be far more sensible than moving a team from Northern Cali to SoCal, or Seattle to OKC etc....

I think compe ion is a good thing so the two cities wanting a piece of the Spurs, if true, would force SA to up its game and I think the city has a lot of potential. Austin ain't going anywhere so it's not a bad quandary imo.

, considering how successful they've been and how involved they are in the community it doesn't seem all that much (compared with, say, the Kings' situation).

If we're talking about stuff that is very very unlikely to happen, I'd also be pissed if the city caused a nuclear holocaust.

If it happens it won't be for another 20+ years, but I bet nobody envisioned the Sonics leaving Seattle or all the drama in Sacramento the last few years.

The Kings had a history of 15 years in Sacramento when they started campaigning for a new arena. 15 years. And it always seemed like the Maloofs wanted out of Sacramento and into a bigger market or into their hometown of Las Vegas. Sacramento also has very few billionaires. San Antonio has 6 with another just under 1 billion.

The Sonics situation was just everything that had to go wrong, going wrong. The tax payers had just built two stadiums (MLB/NFL) and didn't want to pay for another arena. The owner also sold the team to an out of state outfit that lied and always intended to move them. Many a lesson was learned from their plight.

Should have put the ing SBC/ATT downtown. I hate the location out in the middle of nowhere.
The city was INSISTING on a sales tax for the downtown location, and that was never going to pass. The county stepped up with the Rodeo, and proposed the Hotel/rent car tax, which passed with ease, since it was primarily out of towners being taxed. If the stupid mayor had been willing to levy that same tax, the arena would be downtown. He was too in the pockets of the hotel industry, though.

I think a sales tax increase would have passed, by the slimmest of margins, which would have been expected with the Alamodome stuff happening less than 10 years before.

    It definitely would pass today.

Also, I thought it had more to do with the Spurs not wanting a downtown location and the city insisting on it being downtown. I could have sworn I remember hearing or reading that Holt didn't want the Riverwalk stealing away potential revenue from the arena.

It's great that the Spurs are offering incentives to their employees. I hope HEB and USAA can do a similar incentive. There are some fantastic developments happening.

On the arena Austin has a better chance at MLB than the Spurs. I mean they have a Triple A team there. I don't mind where the ATT Center is located. I mean in Houston you have to drive all the way down to south 610 for Reliant. Even when I lived there back in the 80's-90's The Summit (where the Rockets played) was in Greenway Plaza. It's not like either area was bustling with bars and activity. Cowboy Stadium, er AT&T Stadium and the Rangers ballpark aren't in destinations I'm dying to hang out in.

But in the far future there could be a scenario where a new arena could be built where the Ins ute of Texan Cultures currently is. Ultimately preservationists won't win the battle to keep that building.

    The stupidity in this thread.
It is totally rampant, but I liken it to "conditioned ignorance".

Or they could build a couple of state of the art domed stadiums and a new arena half way between San Antonio and Austin, and an huge international airport while they are at it.
Then they could offer a real attraction for MLB and the NFL.

By the way I'm not sure how people can still root for them if they moved from San Antonio. Effectively they would cease to be the team a fan rooted for, iden y-wise.

I would favor the proposal already spoken for in this thread in building a stadium closer to Austin, as long as the team name remains. I think the 49ers are doing that with their stadium an hour outside San Fran.

Downtown SA needs full-time grocery stores, HEB, Trader Joe's, Whole Paycheck, to attract residents more than it needs a part-time basketball palace.
