Not really. I bring up "6" too because most spurfan still can't handle it. No one is hating on Jerry, it's the sad reality that his son is in charge, that is all.

Although the Spurs are doing great this year, it's pretty obvious that their offensive execution relies heavily on the "Popovich system" - which is spacing the floor and a lot of passing.

I know I'm going to probably get a lot of heat for saying this, but as much as it hurt to see Ginobili turn the ball over so many times in the finals last year, it wasn't entirely his fault. Because of this Popovich system, players are to run to their designated spots and be ready for the pass. If you look at the offensive sets this year compared to last, nothing has really changed except for the fact that you don't have a Gary Neal chucking shots that aren't within the offensive sets. Almost all the passes any Spurs players make is passing it to where the player will run to, not where the player is. So when the Heat forced numerous turnovers on the Spurs last year, the system essentially broke down. All the players got scared to pass in fear of turnovers and suddenly the offense was very hard to get clicking again. That's why it was so apparent that the momentum changed so much from game to game simply depending on whether they got their passing off. Now how is this related to Ginobili? It's related because while other players were scared of turnovers and decided to catch passes not while in the act of running, Ginobili threw passes to where others were running to, creating more turnovers.

In either case, the Spurs really do need a go to guy that can handle isolation plays when their passing offensive game breaks down like the Heat exploited them last year.

That last turnover in game 7 by Ginobili was not his fault at all. The defenders switched on the pick, and Duncan had a wide open lane to the basket, but never rolled like he was supposed to. That was Duncan's fault, not Ginobili. And there were several more cases of that happening. I remember thinking the exact same thing when watching it, knowing people are going to blame Manu for all those turnovers, even though many of them were not really his fault.

And as you alluded to, their lack of a guy who can consistently get them buckets in half court sets will once again be their downfall. They have a magnificent system, but elite defenses can limit the effectiveness of any system. Honestly a lot of what changed was when Ray Allen started guarding Danny Green instead of Wade. Wade likes to help off of his man far too much, which allowed Green a plethora of wide open 3s. Ray Allen didn't like his record being broken, and decided to take him on, and take all those open looks away by staying at home and forcing Green to put the ball on the floor, which ruined his rhythm and caused the system to go haywire. What made everything work in their previous 3 championship runs, is that they had guys (Timmy, Ginobili, Parker) who could still find ways to create offense and score even when not running the system. All three of them have gotten older and to the point that they cannot consistently produce in those situations against elite defenders like they used to be capable of.

It's probably gonna end badly again, but I'm going to enjoy the ride. Our window was supposed to be nailed shut after '08 and we were supposed to be in rebuilding mode right now.

    It's all gravy.
Been enjoying the ride for quite some time now. It's nice to win a bunch of les and still be a good team 7 years later. I'm soaking up every moment tbh.

Someone in this thread mentioned earlier that the 04 Pistons was a far superior squad compared to this years Spurs. While I believe the Piston's defense was some of the most nitty gritty defense I've seen in a while, Chauncey Billups was playing out of his mind. Every team that gets to the finals always has and needs a star to will them to victory, or create open shots for other teammates. Unfortunately, Tim Duncan just doesn't command respect for double teams anymore; he got shut down by Shane Battier for god's sake

The offense was fine in the finals last season. If anything, we were extremely reliant on the pick and roll, which was Miami's defensive forte. I think this season we've mixed it up much more with backdoor cuts and adding more post play for Diaw and Kawhi.

Beli is also a much better ball handler and smarter player than Neal will ever be, and Bobo is really having a career year after already being very good for us last playoffs.

Once you get to the WCF/Finals, there's not easy games or matchups...
I think the Spurs are definitely having crisper backdoor cuts and offensive passing game this season compared to the last, but lets not forget just what happens when 3 turnovers in a row happens, the Spurs end up getting scared and all momentum fades. So the question is, if turnovers result from backdoor cuts this year, will the Spurs melt down again like they did last year?

It's not his fault that he cannot command double-teams anymore. It has become very difficult for big men to do that ever since the NBA allowed zone defenses.

is there a reason why he stop with the bank shot? move out to 18ft to spread the floor? its not like splitter or whoever else down low has any real lowpost effect...

i thought duncan enjoyed his back the the basket low posts moves, u know the part where he gets into position rubbing his buttocks into the crotch of the defenders....
