Well, it's a timing issue. They would only have one day to talk to Gasol and get him to agree before they have to match Parsons. Timing is critical and one would imagine they are wayyyyyy behind the 8-ball on that one (although things can move very quickly).
Plus, would HOU really want to pair Gasol with Dwight again? Money is there, but it's an incredibly tight window for HOU at the moment.
With all the new developments that can occur today and the steadfastness of L.A. and Chicago to still make the S&T happen, how can this Spence guy still maintain that Gasol will still be a Spur by midnight tonight?

Also, the key for CHI is that luxury tax. They are at 70M at the moment with only a few options to move back (think they have about 3M they can save in non-guaranteed deals & amnesty on Boozer).
Now that Houston has whiffed on Anthony and Bosh, they will feel pressure to do something and will go with retaining Parsons and pairing Howard with Gasol.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here but I think the Lakers can renounce Gasol, S&T him to the Bulls while they have enough cap space and afterwards excecute the Lin trade (just reported as agreed upon, doesn't mean it's been done already) and those other deals for Young, Hill.
The Bulls should be able to give Gasol around 11mil/year if you combine Dunleavy and their unguaranteed guys.
It would be hilarious if he signed and when RC is asked he said, "The minutes factor was the deal breaker, we had him sold but when they asked if he would get sufficient minutes we couldn't guarantee that especially with Jeff in the picture"
Agent leaks that Gasol will go to the Spurs/OKC for the MLE in order to push someone to up the ante out of fear. Who moreso than a division rival like Houston, now that they lost out on Bosh?

But if he has insider info, then I am always willing to give people the benefit of the doubt until he shows himself to be what he is.
