This is the wrong place to ask about empathy I think.
You honestly think he's risking 12 mil+ to save face? Cmon now.
Before this incident wife beaters usually went on to live successful careers.

There's two sides you could empathize with tbh
not just that, it was also an attempt to save his career. if it went down poorly, she pressed charges, etc, he knew it wouldn't go down well
Regarding civil charges, What would she press charges for? She wasn't physically injured by Rice. She's already "whole." (unless he habitually abused her, but it'd take a whole lot more than just that video for that, and then a habitual abuser isn't going to risk his millions by marrying her. See: Mayweather, Floyd) Regarding criminal charges, the DA didn't need her to prosecute Rice. Could it have been worse? Probably not by much for a first time millionaire offender.
Regarding his career, it depends on what you think his net worth is but it still makes zero sense for him to marry to save his career.
The two figures we're working with are 25 mil (career earnings) and 14 mil (his listed net worth by random websites). His actual net worth is probably somewhere in that range.
At the low end the breakeven point for marriage would be .5X - .5(14) = 0 where X are future earnings. So 14 mil. He's got 9.5 mil left on his contract. (3.5 in 14, 3 in 15, 3 in 16) After that he'd be 31. You'd have to be pretty generous to squeeze another 4.5 mil out of a 31 year old running back who's already on a sharp decline as of 27. But it's possible.
So even if he somehow maximizes out his future earnings (which he wont) and on the low end of his net worth estimates, he barely breaks even by marrying her. More realistically, he doesn't break even by a couple mil. If he expected a 6 game suspension, that's -1.75 mil on his career earnings. And he's already shot at 27, he's gonna be dust by 31. So that's 7.75-9.75 left in career earnings. (giving him 2 vet min seasons)
So he'd have to be planning on staying with her for life if he was going to marry her... That isn't a saving face move. They've been together since high school, it's a whole lot more likely that he doesn't plan on hitting her again than all this other bull .
battery
a lot of times these athletes spend lavishly early in their career because they anticipate continued income. could be all sorts of variables. perhaps she even threatened to push for criminal charges. i just dont think it adds up on surface levelRegarding his career, it depends on what you think his net worth is but it still makes zero sense for him to marry to save his career.

just reread this. his 25 mil in career earnings is all from before the marriage anyway, so that wouldn't be shared in case of a divorce. and property he already owns also would be considered separate property. only the money that is made during the marriage in addition to property acquired during the marriage would be community property. so he'd keep all his previous earnings, and assuming they one day divorced, they would split the earnings between time of the marriage and separation.
of course it all gets muddy if they buy a house during the marriage. if he can somehow prove that he bought the house exclusively with pre-marriage money, its all his, but thats usually tough to do.
but getting married in an effort to save his career still makes sense. he won't lose previous earnings or previously owned property, and at worst only splits what he earns afterwards. it makes more sense if he doesn't intend to buy more property (as in, he already owns the house he is intending to live in).
Therapy will do a lot of good to Professional athletes. The NFL should seriously consider their actions before throwing the book at players. The coaches can actually cope with suspensions and what not, but teams releasing players and voiding contracts is another issue.
I believe he's already been paid $25 mil out of the $35 mil.
I had meant "what would she press charges for" rhetorically. It doesn't matter what you press charges for when you're already whole. (Since the damages act to make you "whole.") Unlikely that she'd get much of anything since she didn't actually get hurt and didn't go to the hospital.
It does make more sense that if you're trying to maximize your money that you'd make sure your assets are completely separate. I wasn't thinking that way--I'd assumed they'd combined some of their assets over the years given how long they'd been together.
No idea if he's got the house he's living in. I was looking it up just a little and apparently last year he was selling his first house he bought. It was only 325k. That's damn surprising. I wonder what the difference is based on the 25 mil earnings vs the 14 mil net worth some places are listed. If he's that frugal, I wonder where the that money went.
