Kersey was one of the unsung heroes off that '99 team. Great player, and by all accounts a great person as well. Very sad news.

Dude would go nuts on us whenever we played Portland back in the day. I could be wrong but I think he was the first player we could say had the le of "a Spurs killer"

Damn. Blood clots are no joke. They sneak up on you and there's no way of knowing that it's present. Heard numerous stories of people dying or almost dying from them.

Posted this in the thread downstairs, but I somehow ended up at a Blazers/Nets game at the Meadowlands in 1991 or 1992 and was really close to the floor. I couldn't tell you anything about that particular game, other than that I saw, from floor level, a young Jerome Kersey's lift and to this day remain awed by it. It was as if he levitated, but explosively. It's hard to describe, but it has stuck with me ever sense.

And, as someone mentioned in this thread or another, I'll always remember his half-court buzzer beater in the first quarter of Game 1 of the 1999 series against the Lakers. I don't think it had anything to do with the outcome of the game or the series, but after years of playoff frustrations, it was an early hint that maybe things would break the Spurs' way for once.

Was very happy for him when the Spurs rang in 1999; those Blazers team that he was such an integral part of in the late 80's and early 90's were awfully good. To see one of the good guys (by all accounts) be able to put the frustrations of those teams to the side and hold that trophy was a moment of vicarious happiness (will always wish that Terry Porter had gotten the same chance). Still shocked to know that he passed away.

He didn't contribute as much on the court, but I know he was a big part of keeping that '99 team mentally together. Without some of those older vets, that team might have folded after that 6-8 start.

RIP, big fella. Thanks for the memories.

    RIP Jerome.

I seem to recall a sign in the stands as the Spurs closed out the Blazers that said something along the lines of "Go Get Your Ring Jerome." Does anyone else remember this? I am fairly certain of the sign's existence but over the years the Spurs helped enough vets to their first championship that the memory is muddled enough that I can't be certain anymore that Kersey was the subject of the sign.
