Tim will have to be forced off the court, like David is these days, or like George Gervin is when he's trying to mooch off Spurs wins.
Well for one thing, $200 million is Duncan's total earnings not net earnings. He has to pay a sizable percentage to his agent and to the US government. Investment scam was like $20 million in loss of his net earnings (which would probably be way greater than 5%) and prenups don't protect the main earner as much as you think it does. For one thing, alimony cannot be agreed in the prenup. Most likely Duncan has to send large checks to his ex-wife every month in addition to splitting up retirement accounts, investments, and property acquired during the marriage. Not to mention child support.
The point is if Duncan is healthy and effective, he won't want to pass up a nice $10 million check.
Tim will have to be forced off the court, like David is these days, or like George Gervin is when he's trying to mooch off Spurs wins.
Duncan has always said he will play til the wheels fall off,,,he's coming back for at least two more seasons.
Back for the Spurs for one to two seasons rolling in bank, get new blood, rolling in bank from his motor shop, and ing and getting the ocassional BJ from Vanessa Macias.... ya I'd be back too!!!
Sounds more like what Manu said in the postgame interview posted on spurs.com.
I wanted so much Timmy getting his sixth and retire, i would have been the happiest person in the world if that happened, also sad to know i won't see my idol play anymore but it would have been a good sad if he was finish on that note... Coming back and Playing next season doesn't feel good, he will be in his 40 year on earth, how much players in history were effective at that age?!?!
Same as the number of players from the VI who go to the BB Hall of Fame.
If it was the end, he'll go out with an elite effort.
He was obviously fantastic for the most part against the Clippers and was great in Game 7. But that was just a continuation of another solid regular season. And, for the 16th time in his 18 seasons, Tim Duncan got at least one MVP vote (this one from the Orlando Magic's play-by-play announcer), and for the 13th time in those 18 seasons, he finished in the top-10 in MVP voting as a result (this time, tied with Kawhi and Klay Thompson for 10th).
He'll almost certainly get some votes for both All-NBA and All-Defense. If he makes an All-NBA team, he'll tie Kareem and Kobe for the most All-League selections all-time. If he makes an All-Defense team, he'll extend his lead with the most such selections in the history of the NBA. He could end up being a 15-time All-NBA player and a 15-time All-Defense player, which is absolutely insane.
You think he's retiring, FWD?
Heard on the radio from someone who said he knows someone close to Spurs and Duncan is 90% to return. And Manu was 50/50 right now.
Timmy should return.
Manu please retire
That was the biggest loss of the season imo. Spurs lost all that built up momentum and were suddenly staring down the barrel of facing LAC, HOU, and GSW all in a row without HCA, then the best out of the east, also possibly without HCA.
Must've been very deflating for them.
I have no idea, but I certainly hope not.
Would hate to see Tim out there just trying to keep up and unable to perform at the high level that we've been accustomed to -- not for my own sake, but for his, knowing just what a compe or he is and how much pride he takes in playing well. It would certainly help if he could be assured that his load could be reduced during the regular season, which would require that the Spurs find another reliable big who can play long minutes without diminishing the team's quality.
Frankly, assuming that he still wants to play and believes he can make it through another season playing at a very high level, I think the question for Tim really comes down to whether the Spurs can be good enough, depth-wise, to remain near the top of the division/conference while being judicious with his minutes. That question gets really tricky, given that the Warriors and Clippers show every sign that they'll sustain themselves into next season, the Thunder will likely be much better, the Rockets were pretty terrific for most the year without Howard, and the Pelicans are on the come. These West teams face that dilemma -- you can be really, really good and end up with a 6-8 seed by a very small margin. Fighting like for 82 games for a great team, only to end up with a need to win 3 or 4 straight road series if you have le aspirations is a pretty high toll to exact on any player, but might seem particularly high for a guy looking at 40.
That's not a plea for Aldridge, but I think luring another player who can shoulder some of the burden -- particularly during the regular season -- would go a long way (I think) to bringing Tim back for another round.
Great response tbh. He played a ton of games/minutes this season.
I think he comes back. But the fact that he still had to anchor the defense and carry the squad through much of the playoffs should absolutely be unacceptable for a 39yo and for a franchise as well run as the Spurs....
