Argentina didn't have the best defense. In fact our defenders were so ty in the group stage (where we managed to avoid the historical embarrassment of getting eliminated by the likes of Bosnia, Iran and Nigeria only thanks to Messi) that Sabella decided to scratch the offensive minded 4-3-3 (where Messi shined) to an ultra defensive 4-4-2 so that our ty defenders didn't get exposed so much. That's why the goal tally decreased as well as Messi's involvement on games. It's hard for a playmaker to do much when your team doesn't have the ball.

Not that I give a about povertyball or the gots that play it, but by your logic, DK was never the undisputed best player in his career. Bird, Magic, Hakeem, Shaq, and Duncan won rings during DK's career and Barkley, D-Rob and Malone won MVP's.
If the third-world kickball media is anything like the NBA media, they probably give the poverty MVP to different players out of voter fatigue and/or hate for the real best player, which is why Steve Trash, Kirby and Gangster Disciple have won MVP's during LeBron's career.
