Dude needs playing time, and he is not getting it here. Hard to really keep your skills honed and get used to the speed of the NBA game when you are only playing in practice and 3-4 garbage minutes once a week.

Boban seems to be a good dude and has been in good spirits with the team so far. He's always up on the bench clapping and supporting the team, even in street clothes. Hopefully he doesn't take this as a slight and, if he does...well, he can get over himself.
Pretty much this, Pop does this all the time with new players - especially in their 1st year. I'm sure Boban wants to play anyways.

Two games seems likely. Austin plays tonight and tomorrow night in Austin and then doesn't play again until next Friday. No need to leave them in Texas while the Spurs travel to games in Philly and Toronto next week.

They both need the minutes. I'd have to imagine that Dleague time came up during the negotiations with Boban and this isn't disrespectful in any way, it's just a way to get him some real game reps.

Baynes played in the D-league too. He previously played in some minor league in Europe. So it's not unusual that this happened to Boban. Besides... it was obvious he was really rusty the last game.

It would take 1 ankle turn from Tony or Patty for us to need Ray for at least 15 good minutes in a game

It would take simultaneous injuries to Diaw, Butler, Anderson, and West for us to even remotely need Bonner for garbage minutes

    Bonner dresses for the games

Spurs should start seriously thinking of trading McCallum. He's supposed to be a Cojo replacement but I haven't been impressed with his play making skills or his defensive skills.
Poor playmaking AND defensive skills ... hmm, sounds like a total package. He should command a real strong trade value. Great idea!

I think he's got an expiring contract... that may be worth something!

BTW... is that Nando de Colo guy a free agent?

    This.

I think this was a great move for him. I think he is a fantastic player, but it is apparent at this point he cannot hide behind the "limited minutes" excuse when games are on the line. Playing against scrappy players that are dying to make it to the NBA seems to be what he needs to adjust to the NBA. I basically think he needs to be faster with his decision making. In the NBA you have to use instincts because guys although may not be as big, but they have been playing against this compe ion much longer and react much faster.

No, he is playing in CSKA Moscow, and has great stats. http://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/...asoncode=E2015

I'm glad that both of them will get a bunch of minutes. I'd like to see the looks on the faces of the guys who see Boban for the first time. There should be some guys trying to prove something, so hopefully they will challenge him. I still think he's got the skills to contribute here, once he adjusts to the NBA. You can't teach tall.

Been pretty impressed with both of them in the little time they've played. Simmons has gotten better too.

It's nice the Spurs bench isn't being wasted with scrubs like Austin Daye and Errors.
Bonner and his re ed socks say hi.

It's really weird. I know you're not a troll, but your takes on players and basketball are just so damn atrocious. Like how do you even know that?

I think it's so they can just get some playing time.

It's noteworthy that Ray had to actually agree to go, being a 2 season veteran, and could've easily refused. This speaks well of him.

As far as Boban, they can only send him down 3 times max, but with 1/4 of a season gone, it probably makes sense also so he could get some minutes.

I think they are on Anderson's path from last season: sent there with an assignment to work on different things probably for most of the season, only to be recalled if we need them.

It really didn't make sense to send Simmons' there. He's a rookie, but in terms of development compared to newly drafted rookies, they are not on the same level. He would be like a 3rd yr. player on the Spurs in reality, having spent 2 years developing his game in the Dleague, then being a featured guy in summer league, plus he has obvious talent and he's not an undeveloped youngster who needs to strengthen his body. He is already 26, entering the prime of his game, and at a point where he needs to be fast tracked against NBA level compe ion, and we have better coaches in San Antonio, which already shows in his much improved ball handling and even new moves being added to his repertoire.

    Ray
can play in the NBA obviously and he' s not a rookie, but he had poor coaching in Sacramento and in the limited minutes that I saw him, it showed that he wasn't familiar enough with the Spurs offense and had trouble with simple things like entering the ball into the post, or just calling out a set and getting guys in their spots before attacking. I suspect his assignment is to run the point full time in Austin specifically to get him familiar with the sets, what plays he can run for himself and secondary actions that he can use, as well as what plays to run for others. He didn't strike me as a talented passer, but neither was CoJo. He just needs to be solid in understanding the offense well enough and right now he doesn't. He can't be compared to Simmons in this regard, who spent two years in Austin.

Boban needs to work on his individual post moves besides his defense. He has potential but is turning the ball over at too high a rate, and is out of position on defense very often. I noticed in the Atlanta game, the last like 6 mins of blow out time, Anderson was on rim protection every possession and Boban all the time in the perimeter. Sometimes it was a fastbreak situation but not always. He was just simply out of position, and leaving Anderson in an island back at the rim. He needs to learn how to shield the ball, etc.

I suppose this means Simmons has already entered into the list of players that we are going to use through the season, and that is why he was getting an extended look at every possible situation. I expect the Spurs to even use him from time to time in different lineups the same as they have done with Anderson, particularly because the bench needs at time a scoring punch and Johnathon can score!

I'm surprised they send Boban down to the DL tbh..Seems kind of disrespectful for a player of his caliber.
Probably as much about keeping in shape as skills development.
