This is what confuses people about Muhammad... he was a Prophet, teacher, preacher, religious figure... but also had to deal with political and military situations due to the advent of the early Islamic State. There are some controversial aspects to some of the decisions he made, such as the fate of the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayza, and he did have some aggressive caravan raids (therefore not all Muslim actions were defensive), but such is the case with pretty much any political figure. Relatively speaking though, he was a very merciful man and was genuine in his message. It's nonsense when people assert he's a maniacal narcissist, when he was considered honest and trustworthy by pretty much everyone even before prophethood.. and in the 8 years of military campaigns casualties hovered around 1000 (low for the standards of Arab warfare of the time), and he modified the rules of warfare for the better.
