You can argue BB is the only series that never had a letdown season of most recent series.

Justified was great, but season 5 was not very good, and even seasons 3 and 6 had some very low valleys.

Sons of Anarchy was straight after season 3.

Shield was a caricature by season 5.

Walking Dead hasn't been nearly as gripping as ratings suggest.

    Then even premium shows...

Game of Thrones season 4 and 5 had some very trite plots that carried on and on forever.

Homeland was pretty horrible after season 2.

Boardwalk Empire had issues throughout that were magnified by the end.

Penny Dreadful is still a better cast and idea than product.

True Detective had a lull in season 1's last few episodes that carried into season 2 new cast and plot line.

But BB only got better. Only got darker. Only got stronger. Characters never felt trite. Plots never carried on too long. You went from hating to loving to hating characters because that was the intention, not because they wasted a characters potential for so long.

Better Call Saul is off to a great start, but they actually started in quality similar to season 3 of BB so it will be tough to never have a letdown season.

Banshee might be the only other show of 3+ seasons to not have a letdown, and it won't because it ends this year.

But that's a different sort of show. BB superior to it in every way.

lol tough critic. calling homeland terrible is horse . Its been solid

    Homeland season 1 was incredible.
Homeland season 2 was pretty good, and great at times.
    Homeland season 3 was insufferable.
Homeland season 4 was dragging, then incredible for 3 episodes, then ended on did.
Homeland season 5 was not good, but maybe not terrible.

    I'd go:

    9.5/10
    8.0/10
    5.0/10
    7.0/10
    5.5/10

So terrible may have overstated overall, but I did qualify after season 2, so.

I've already said it but the most recent season of South Park is up there with any season of TV I've ever seen.

The wire is fantastic. Game of thrones is good for the first couple of seasons. Kind of now though. Dexter is good entertainment. Heroes is good for the first season. I'm sure I am forgetting some other shows.

edit: Narcos is ing fantastic as well

Good call on Narcos, I'm surprised that show didn't get more buzz.

True Detective - And avoid season 2 at all costs. The seasons aren't related.
True dat. Season 2 is horrifically bad.

The Wire - I need to give this a second chance. It never clicked with me.

If you want newer shows that are going to end up being epic when they end go watch Billions and Mr. Robot.

Season 2 may have sunk True Detective. It doesn't appear that there is going to be a third season. Or does anybody know different?

Best TV series I've ever watched is still The Wire with nothing else coming close.
Yeah, I just finished BB also.

I feel like it wasn't fair, because I had a number of people telling me that it was better than The Wire.

Sorry, it's not even close. BB is great for what it does. But it's a twist on a fairly standard story.

The Wire was the most complete series I've ever seen. They examined everything, from every angle. They drilled down into the culture, the repercussions, and how it all ties together. Watching The Wire isn't just a great TV show it's an education on the recent history of Baltimore, done in a way that never seems droning or heavy-handed. Season 5 was a bit wonky for TW, but seasons 1, 3, and 4 are near perfection. I loved season 2 too but I feel I'm in the slight minority there.

That said, BB was a very well-crafted narrative, with EXCELLENT storytelling mechanics and open-ended enough to keep you guessing.

Season 2 was my second favorite of The Wire, with Season 4 obviously being the high water mark.

I loved season 2 as well and don't understand why most people didn't like it. I can't think of any other TV show, or movie for that matter, in recent memory that examined the decline of working class white families in America as thoroughly as Season 2 did.

IMO people didn't like it just because it put the main focus on the white/blue collar/docks world and took it away from the blacks/drugs/ghetto theme (which is much more familiar and "sexy" so to speak). They wanted more of season 1 and were just close minded to change. I thought season 2 was great as well.

If they didn't force the boring newspaper storyline it would have been great. Also, Marlo was never anywhere close to as interesting a character as Avon or Stringer. If it wasn't for Snoop, then Marlo's whole crew would have been boring as .
I liked Marlo, to me he seemed to be a blend of Avon and Stringer. He wanted to be street famous but also seemed to be more intelligent that the average dealer.

Omar was only in like 3 episodes but he was incredible.

This was/is the deal-breaker for me. Yawn. I will give the show another look, however.

Was weird seeing the actor who played Ziggy older in Bosch season 2, which is pretty good and has a lot of Wire alums in it:

I suggest you check out Hannibal, it came on NBC but it was actually fantastic. Extremely well done and well acted, only 39 episodes but very densely packed one of the best shows to come on network TV in a decade.

The descent of a normal man into crime out of desperation is not 'typical' as opposed to a police drama.

Cop shows are a dime a dozen. I like The Wire and while it's a more cynical look at cops than say Blue Bloods, its still of a very developed genre. Perhaps the most done subject and plot in TV history. They even had the kingpin. Basically, what I read here is that you like the Wire because you identify with it.

They're both great shows but I agree with you that BB was more novel and fresh. I can't really think of anything to compare it to, better or worse.
But even though the Wire was another cop show, it was superior than anything before or after. IMO. The characters and development were on a different level. I'll throw in Homicide as another damn good cop show. At least in the beginning. And considering it was on network tv.
