That red card for Romero is huge for the next game. He is probably their most important player.

It's not an excuse. It's not being a re and actually knowing something about football. We have already been through this with Chile last year and I ended being right, as 99% of the time.

No matter the compe ion, if you spend 20 games unbeaten, 10 games winning in a row and I don't remember how many games without even allowing a goal, you're doing something right. These two same Argentina and Mexico teams played not too long ago and Mexico run circles around Argentina; but apparently now, for some odd reason, Argentina should be the "mega favorite" in a match between the two
chile winning that final on blown penalties doesnt mean you were right about them being favorites, it meant that they needed some things going their way (at home, di maria injury, no red for medel, higuain blowing his penalty- you know, that luck you're going on about) to finally win a cup after 120 minutes and a badly missed penalty. Despite all that Argentina squandered chances and choked, higuain rightfully gets most of the blame and messi has a part.

conversely, argentina losing to germany wasnt bad luck- on the contrary, we were lucky to have two amazing chances practically gift wrapped- it was ty ing finishing from supposedly very good finishers, and again higuain gets most of the blame. i've never crucified messi for his last two finals, but they didnt help change the narrative of him not living up to expectations for the NT.

the problem is when people like you want to say hes best all time and by doing so raise those expectations further, so to justify the lowkey performances you prop up the opposition and make excuses for him. im pretty sure i read you somewhere going on about conmebol being the strongest region and dismissing friendlies and weak opponents from other federations (i agree!), but now mexico's supposedly impressive streak is all crappy teams and friendlies vs decent ones + argentina. That argentina game was nearly a year ago and mexico's streak is cut by a coach change in between, i dont see how "these two same" applies, and if all mexico can pull out of running circles around us is a 2-2 draw then my point stands, argentina are mega favorites on talent alone- if the coach/players are too stupid or mentally weak to use that talent is another story that unfortunately im too familiar with.

when i think of unlucky argentina teams, i think of 98, batistuta hitting the post / 02, veron getting injured before the WC and a terrible group, 06, abbondanzieri getting injured (wasted a sub and was a pk specialist), luck had nothing to do with losing the 2014 final, and 2015 chile had luck on their side but argentina still wasted the best opportunities. i think any of those 98 / 02 / 06 teams would easily beat the 14 team.

and this discussion of top 10 teams right now- its arguable if there have EVER been 10 similarly skilled top national teams, agree with daf that football is not the NBA playoffs/more upsets happen but despite that, the list of WC winning nations is probably shorter than NBA franchises that have won rings, my point is that parity is not common at all in this sport and brasil, germany, italy and argentina are on another tier than the rest- bad for them is a good result for most teams, and when they are bad its rarely for lack of talent. Ive been saying for almost a decade that the overall level of play has come down, and in large part thats because brasil, argentina and italy have all been pretty crappy for most of this time, so you see freak occurrences like spain winning a WC or chile winning a copa america.

tl:dr, despite this argentina team (with or without messi) being completely underwhelming, they are still absolutely the favorite by a large margin, or do you think gamblers are re ed too?

Never said Mexico was the favourite, tbh. I just said they are a contender, which they are. Argentina is also a contender. And yes, Argentina has more talent than Mexico but that doesn't mean that losing against Mexico should necessarily be a choke. Mexico is the hottest team of the the teams in this tournament. Add the home court advantage and what we have already said about upsets being more likely on a single elimination game in football and it's pretty unfair to call it a definite "choke" if Argentina doesn't win it all, without even analyzing the situations.

"Championship or bust" is a very disgusting and frustrating way of thinking, imho. And is even more unfair on single elimination football tournaments. 'cause in this tournaments very rarely the best team is the team that ends up winning it all. You don't believe me? Just go and make a recount of all the times the best or favoured team (at the start of a tournament like this) doesn't end up winning it all.

And Messi is GOAT level, whether you like it or not. Argentina not being good or lucky enough to win championships during this time has little to do with Messi as an individual player. He has broke (or is in path of breaking) almost any individual record there is. He has done things that I haven't seen anyone else do and he has mantained a longevity very few have accomplished.

He's by far the best player I have ever seen, if you have seen better players fine. But saying Messi doesn't belong in the list of the very very best in history is a moronic thought that not many people will agree with.

Paraguay left it all on the field vs Berracos. Commendable. Even multiple players collapsed on the field as the final whistle was blown.

That's all you can ask for from a team.

Wish the Spurs had 50% the heart the Paraguayans showed tbqh

Of course this is the same country that went to war vs. Argentina, Brazil.

Yes those 2 got countries Argentina and Brasil ganged up on little Paraguay and those s held them back. IMO they are the Vietnam of South America. U don't with those s. Of course you don't with my berracos either. Unless u wanna end up like Neymar in a wheelchair

I don't know about that 'arrogance' thing, and I'm never wrong, tbh

We are not arrogant, we are just perfect.

In all fairness, that's why Manu is so likable as well. Besides being well spoken he's very humble about his abilities - he is a perfect Spur (even when all things aren't going his way).

True. 3 superpowers vs basically a group of Guarani villages. Thankfully for them El Chaco is a ruthless land, no trees and 110 degrees daily . Brazilian and argentine soldiers basically their pants when they arrived there

s were armed to the teeth and were chased away by a bunch of barefoot spear chukers

Paraguay was one of the most solid countries back then thanks to protectionism and growing economy/infrastructure. But the ruling dude at the time wanted to get involved in the Uruguay War and that sealed his faith.
