The Warriors are in among the largest markets in the country and have a player that's been a big star since he was lighting up March Madness, let alone winning NBA MVP's. The Cavs are technically in a small market but have the most popular player of the last decade and one of the most popular of all-time plus are the only team in a very large state.

A small market NBA Finals without star power would be the Jazz, Kings or Pelicans playing the Bucks, Hornets or Pacers in some combination.
I have always wanted to see a Jazz-Pacers finals. It would be comedy to see ESPN and Stephen A in tears if that finals ever went down.

I'd have a feeling ABC execs would veto it. Small market teams without mega-stars, forget it. They'd rather have seven games of the current Knicks versus the current Lakers over that.

Lebron and Curry are two of the most heavily marketed NBA players. That's why.
Yet Lebron was in the finals in 2007 when Cavs/Spurs set the record for ratings futility.

    Try again.

Hey da_suns_fan, does this destroy the small market excuse too?
Yes, of course it does. It wasnt that the Spurs were in a small market or werent marketed enough etc. Its just no one cared.

    You tell me the reason.

Whatever it was..it has nothing to do with Market sizes.

Maybe because everyone knew that series was gonna be a rout before it started and as it went along.

The NBA finally got it right and made sure Game 7 was on a Sunday night instead of a random weeknight like Lakers-Celtics and Heat-Spurs.

In fact, they should make sure to target Sunday Game 7s for all good series. It's really not that hard if you work the schedule right.

    Which one?

    Spurs/Cavs, Spurs/Nets or Spurs Pistons?

Im sure having game 7 on a Sunday only helped but my point is market sizes dont matter. You can get PLENTY of exposure in today's NBA no matter where you play.

Are Durant and Westbrook under-exposed because they play in OKC?

NFL and NBA are both national sports and it's all about the players (and some historically popular teams, some of which are in miniature markets like Green Bay).

MLB and NHL are provincial and make a lot of money (MLB off live TV 162x a year) locally but lack the national following. I'll tune into a good playoff game in either of those sports but less interest when my team's not in it. I'm fine tuning into most random NBA and any NFL games.

The NBA went through a slump (in terms of viewership) in the mid-2000s. We've known this. However, viewership does not necessarily reflect quality. People are stupid.

Given the current state of U.S.A, we'll be seeing Suns fans loading up on guns traveling to San Antonio knocking off whataburgers and all sports memorabilia stores.

I don't market size mattered in this one. People wanted to see the Warriors choke. Plain and simple.

I for once agree with the massive dumb that market size is becoming less and less important of a factor in driving television ratings.

The most important things a series needs to have now to draw is:

    1. Marketable big stars
    2. Storylines

Market size still isn't completely irrelevant. The Lakers could be the most boring and uninteresting team in the league, and they would still pull solid numbers in the Finals, but it's less of a factor today.
