Becky mentions defense and rebounding but not talking about LJC's offense as an expected contribution is not encouraging
With Gasol and Aldridge as offensive starters and Anderson as the current plan for PF with Bertans as the swing-forward, having a defense-first guy who can guard four positions is incredibly helpful.

People are wondering how the team can "match up" with the Triple Triples and their bouncer. Well, having a guy who can throw in to guard Klay, Durant, Iggy or Draymond for a few minutes is nice to have. Not that the team is counting on LJC being a rotation-caliber player right away. It's just that skill-set being proven at the NBA level would make him plenty useful.

Don't agree. Spurs need three big men that can offer big man offense, now they only have two. What happens when Pop rests Gasol or the inevitable injury that takes one of the two out for a few games happens?

According to Jeff McDumbass, he was added to the roster before game 1, but he hasn't sniffed any time. He looked useful to me when he played against the Spurs in Utah. As bad as Simmons has been at running the point, I'm excited about anyone that can bring the ball up without dribbling it off his foot.
I mean, someone with Arcidiacono's poise and BBIQ along with Forbes' stroke would be a really nice prospect. It's possible that they are trying to give him a multi-year contract, which could explain why he's not signed and why they don't know about Bertans yet. Long shot, but I could understand it.

How many team's have three bigs who can score at a high level? And how many of those teams have a top two like Gasol and Aldridge? Anyway, Anderson is likely going to be a PF, so you have to count his offense. There's no way anyone reasonable should be trying to dog on the sixth big for not being a scorer.

Super duper long shot. Neither Archdiacono nor Forbes look like they're ready to be useful, and as athletic as Murray looks, I can't imagine that he has the poise to contribute, at least early on. Particularly considering how bad Simmons has looked, I'd really rather have guys that are solid over guys that could be really good in two or three years.

When Pop rests Gasol the Spurs have the best scoring big in the entire league. Play goddamn defense and grab any rebounds and throw the ball back to Lamarcus.

My expectations are so low that I'm more excited about seeing Olivier Hanlan.

Well, we won't see SAGirl for like two weeks...

I think this is for the best. I hope LJC starts along with Bertans eventually. I also hope Anderson stays with the team to give them some advice. No one can deny his BBIQ.

My guess is that as a first-rounder, his contract is easy -- as is the insurance agreement. Bertans has to worry about getting the exactly dollar amount taken care of, which might be affected by the order of signings.

Anyway, it's great news. I just hope LJC gets a lot of minutes. It's going to be hard to see him getting those if Anderson taking so many PF minutes and there already being a three-center rotation. I guess they can demote Forbes and move some others around, but I would rather not do that.

I thought his agent said that he wasn't playing until he had a contract? But I assume you're talking about insurance because he's playing without a signed contract?

For those who don't know, rookies can be paid as little as 80% of the scale, up to as much as 120% of the scale. So there really is a significant amount of variation in what the Spurs could wind up paying him. The Spurs could also renounce his rights, and not have to take up his rookie guaranteed contract. I assumed that's why his agent didn't want him to play until the contract was signed. If they get to have a look at him in SL before they commit, that's a big plus. This is one season when they really have to make salary dollars count.

Or does him playing tonight mean that the Spurs are taking up his contract no matter what?

I'm not talking about elite big man offense. I'm talking about any big man offense. Last year Spurs had 5, Duncan, Aldrige, West, Diaw and Boban. This year they have two that can play inside and stretch the defense. I realize LJC was highly unlikely to be a third but that still leaves the Spurs critically short on interior offense. Next best on the team is Leonard's post ups.

Seems like they're going to have to make a move at some point, doesn't it?

I don't remember hearing anything for LJC's agent. But even so, with Tim waived, LJC's contract can be signed without issue.

Yeah, but not really. First, because again, players get 120 percent of the scale literally 99 percent of the time. Second, that "variation" pales in comparison to Bertans' possible range.

The Spurs could also renounce his rights, and not have to take up his rookie guaranteed contract. I assumed that's why his agent didn't want him to play until the contract was signed. If they get to have a look at him in SL before they commit, that's a big plus.
I can't stress enough how much this would hurt the team's reputation. Honestly, it would literally destroy any shred of credibility the organization had, especially internationally. You just don't do that. You just don't.

You bring up Leonard like his post game is an afterthought. And Anderson is definitely a post player. The issue is that offensive sixth bigs aren't even good at offense most of the time. That usually just means they suck at defense.

Yeah, I don't think the insurance issue has anything to do with the player or the NBA, but with the overseas team that owns their rights. That's how Murray managed to get coverage even before they signed him.

LJC is a free agent (hence why his coming over was certain despite people saying he wasn't ready), so it's not that. I do think it's a lot to do with the contract. I don't even think it's a visa issue, as I'm pretty sure he's been in the States for a while now. I think it has everything to do with him being able to ink his deal.

It's encouraging that it's not done yet. I'm not overly concerned with him playing in the summer league, though I'd love to see him. But him not being signed even though Duncan is waived suggests that he they might want to use cap space on something else. It's between him and Gasol for next in line at this point.

How much does that realistically give in space to make move with?
