Japan just upset the All-Blacks in rugby. Amazing. And yeah, may as well discuss that sport here too, as it's not going to get enough attention to warrant its own thread.

It was group play, but still. Very intense. And they celebrated like they have won a medal. Still, though, that was an intense game.

Wrong sport. The All Blacks play Rugby Union involving 15 men per team, not Rugby Sevens.

They're still called the All-Blacks (well, the All Black Sevens), according to Wikipedia.

The only things this Sevens team has in common with the All Blacks is the somewhat similar team name and code-hopper Sonny Bill Williams (who is also a familiar face in Australia's Rugby League scene). But it's nowhere close to having the collection of best Kiwi players from the Super Rugby compe ion that form the All Blacks.

Japan's rugby is growing. They defeated the Springboks in the last WC.

If Rugby Sevens and 15s are so different, explain why the US sucks at both.

I loved the heart they played with. Congrats on the win, btb. It was excited down to the end.

Rugby has always been popular in Japan. And Asians with their smaller stature are less disadvantaged in the Sevens game.

But Japan's victory over the Springboks was indeed a big shocker.

Can't blame the US for underperforming, since the NFL absorbs the most talented athletes.

If American football is an Olympic sport, the tables will be turned.

Seriously. Two yellow cards and a try awarded by penalty.

You just can't tell me that in a country with more than 300 Million people, they can't find a dozen or so half-backs, linebackers and safeties with ball skills and passing vision. I understand that rugby is criminally under-appreciated here (my third-favorite sport behind basketball and AFL), but come on. They had years to prepare for this.

USA was about to get a Super Rugby franchise (the best rugby clubs tournament in the world) but they weren't able to guarantee a high-level roster.
