Bad news for N0 LyF3 ScRuB and all of $cam's other player fans - looks like the Panthers are slowly waking up to who the better option is at QB:
But one thing not concerning the Panthers is Newton's replacement, Derek Anderson.
"The same faith I have in 1," guard Trai Turner said when asked about the faith he had in Anderson replacing Newton, who wears No. 1. "[Anderson] gets reps also. Just like two guys stepped up today at new positions. It’s just the name of the game."
But can the offense survive without Newton?
History says yes.
Anderson has started twice since 2011 when Newton couldn't play. Both came in 2014 and both, ironically, came against the Buccaneers.
Anderson was 2-0 in those games, leading Carolina to a 20-14 victory at Tampa Bay and a 19-17 victory at home. He completed a combined 49 of 74 pass attempts for 507 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions for a rating of 100.05.
Anderson almost led Carolina back on Sunday, twice cutting the gap to eight in the final five minutes with touchdown passes. The defense simply couldn't stop Atlanta, in particularly wide receiver Julio Jones.
Jones' 75-yard touchdown with 3:45 remaining gave the three-time Pro Bowler 300 yards receiving and Atlanta a 41-26 cushion.
Anderson finished 17-of-23 passing for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
"He did some pretty good things with the exception of the one he was throwing away," Carolina coach Ron Rivera said of Anderson and the interception. "He made some good decisions, some really good reads.
"He handled himself well under the cir stances and got us down there in position to score again."
So Rivera is confident Anderson can replace Newton.
