I'll give them credit for lucking out with Leonard but without him, they're a bottom feeder. This is the 90s all over again. I don't expect Kawhi sticking it out long term if the Spurs can't make significant upgrades to this roster.

Also, Gasol opting out and signing long term with the Spurs isn't the kind of move you make if the Spurs are planning to sit back and pay off some loyalty for the next year. That has the potential to be s disastrous flexibility crusher ahead of next year's free agency. Signing a guys like Simmons and Paddy to multi year mega deals based on market value would also destroy the Spurs future flexibility.
    /sigh
    that's depressing.
I like Jsimms but no on some mega max deal lol
Paddy: hopefully he gets paid somewhere else. If he's back for $15 mill.

PJ Tucker and Kyle Korver. If that's not a smokescreen for what the Spurs are really after I'm going to hit the bottle harder than RC ever did.

I took a lot of here exactly one year ago, for saying the Spurs should have taken a year off to rebuild. Damn near everyone here jumped on the bandwagon that the Spurs couldn't afford to "waste" a year of Kawhi/LMA. I said that there was zero chance of them getting all the way to the Finals, and it was EXACTLY the time do a 1 year rebuild. So they made it to the WCF, and Kawhi/Tony got hurt, and a bunch of people told themselves that the Spurs really would have won it all, if not for some bad luck. I was looking at the future of the franchise vs. an almost non-existent chance of a Championship. The Spurs were already in cap last season, and they just made it worse rather than biting the bullet and dealing with a mounting problem.

Now here we are facing the EXACT problems I said the Spurs would have this year. They have too many contracts, and too many holes too fill without the cap space to do it. You're right, they're sitting at an inflection point, and the direction they go is going to have some long-term consequences. You're also right that the move with Gasol looks a lot like they are still not going to bite the bullet and do a proper rebuild. The big problem is, even if they make the right decisions, it's a year too late to do it right. Because last year they could have gotten some younger players, future picks, and tanked for a decent pick this year. All the pain would be out of the way, some of the pieces would already be in place, and they would have some serious cap space for this years FA class.

They just took on Gasol for three years - no matter what his skills were, he's old. It sure looks like they are keeping Parker (rather than biting the bullet), and I have this nasty feeling that they'll re-sign him for at least two more years, if he manages to come back in January. And I would be shocked if they don't bring in some other half-assed, over-used player at an inflated salary, with another 3 year contract or 3+1. Kawhi and local knowledge will carry them to a 24-25 draft pick, with a zero percent chance of holding the LOB at the end of this season. And THAT is the worst kind of waste of Kawhi's best years.

That's it for me until July 1st. Tired of hearing all these rumors, none of which have been positive on the spurs front.
    Ok. See ya tonight.

Yeah, midnight can't get here soon enough.

They've been loyal, and made it to the WCF last season, in which they got hit with the injury bug.

These guys will never fully rebuild anytime soon IMO. They "rebuilt" on the fly years ago, and the trade for Kawhi sprung this team back into serious contention. They'll do whatever is necessary to stay compe ive, but I just don't believe they'll ever like just have all young/inexperienced guys out there in hopes of landing a lottery pick.

I also don't believe they'll sit back and waste Kawhi's best years, and expect them to make some moves this summer.

    I'm with bklynspursfan
Sure they lucked into KL. They lucked into him because they where constantly trying to upgrade the roster, without top draft picks and inability to go way over the cap.
Look at all the champs since 2007, all where either way over the cap- or had multiple lottery picks in the years leading up to their le (sometimes both)- except one. If they are not able to surround KL with talent to compete, I wouldn't be shocked if they let him walk for mutual benefit.
I'm giving PATFO the benefit of the doubt for now. This will be an extremely tricky off season for reasons mentioned above.

I take all these " Spurs interested in" with a Kilogram of salt
I have my doubts. The Spurs Like shooters, but a 36 year old....with lots of other needs
36 is like 25 in Spurs years.

I think we have not gone over cap in all our les. If not, we defiantly have not paid tax. And back then, there wasn't repeater tax. Crazy how good we have been.

I hope so, but all signs point to sticking with the status-quo. They'll stay loyal to TP, Manu, Gasol, and look like they're stuck with Aldridge. They'll win 60 games and lose to the Warriors, and I think they're okay with that.
    Bingo.

We are not in a bad situation or worse situation. Our aim was always space for 2018. We had a three year plan with this side. We are le condensers. And the only reason why it looks bad is because of Durant's decision. It has put in a massive spanner in the works.

nah... to me Lamarcus screwed up.
Also they got hit with injuries and that can happen to any team, but when you have ancient players, it has a bigger percentage of happening... also of those guys not coming back right... though the jury is still out on Tony.
