I can't blame play calling at this time with no offensive line. Opposing coaches watch film and game plan. It's pretty obvious Ehlinger must be contained. It's just not easy calling plays. And if you are watching on the tube, quick routes over the middle are turnover dreams. We can't adequately see safetys creeping up, etc... We are simply trying to stay in games right now, not eliminate any chance we have to be in a game. Our receivers are not making great catches right now, they just are not. No bobble clean tough catches are not the norm for this team. So I simply don't trust the passing game either, especially, especially, in traffic.

Oline sucking is a given, yet we see slow developing outside runs and no quick routes over the middle despite having multiple tall receivers who could get inside position on routes like that. It may or not be Beck, but you giving him a pass for calling multiple runs for Ehlinger outside despite being up in the booth and not seeing is weird.
This is legit and will be very tough from now on. Maybe seeing Sam sit and Beuchele back on is a blessing in disguise. You watch film and it's pretty obvious we have very few alternatives for moving the ball. We really need our receivers to make extraordinary plays consistently IMO.

There may be something to this because Tom is now putting Mehringer up in the booth with Beck, so we might see some changes to what both guys are seeing. I also agree with the idea that we aren't utilizing our players efficiently. That might be more related to still getting to know these guys or the rotation is just off tilt to the play calling. I don't know, but that is something that needs to be fixed.

I know that the most effective plays we run are quick hitters that don't rely on the oline to keep their blocks, but if all we ran was quick hitters then we basically are asking the defense to only defend 20 yards of the field at one time. You can't make it easy on the defense, they have to know they will pay for playing close to the line.

I also get why we don't utilize the middle more, it's the scary part of the field for our coaches since that is where most interceptions go and our QBs don't see it as well. This team can't give up a ton of turnovers and win the game, we play conservative and play field position with a solid defense. We do that and we win ball games, if we try and get crazy we will end up giving up turnovers and letting winnable games slip away. The fact that we have lost 3 winnable games is a testament to the fact we kept ourselves in the game and put us in a position to win.

Update on QB Cameron Rising of Newbury Park, CA after his official visit to UT (24/7):

“The visit was great,” Rising said. “The parts that stood out to me were talking with the coaches and the players. I got to talk a lot to Max mins and Jordan Pouncey. The only bad part was the loss.”

“It’s definitely got an attractive look with the quarterback situation being an up for grabs kind of deal,”
Rising said. “I’m ready to go in there and compete. I’m really excited, and that’s putting it lightly."

“When I get there in January, I’m going to really work on understanding the game plans and why Coach (Tim) Beck makes the calls he does and learning the offense.”

“They were just telling me how happy they are to get me on campus,” Rising said. “They want someone that can extend plays and make all the passes. They want someone who can do what both Shane (Buechele) and Sam (Ehlinger) do rolled up into one person.”

“I feel like the visit strengthened my commitment a little bit,” Rising said. “I liked that I got to spend more time with the coaches and the players. But schools like LSU, Michigan and Arizona State are still talking to me.”

Some notes from The Football Brainiacs...

-Texas remains #1 for DE Ronnie Perkins of St. Louis, MO despite the recent losses. He will visit OU this weekend.

-they have a source telling them they expect DE Ron Tatum of Oklahoma City, OK to take an official visit to UT.

-Texas will continue recruiting JUCO TE Dominick Wood-Anderson and TE Mustapha Muhammad.

C Zach Shackleford was a no-go today as well. This may be worse than the others, with the way this OL leaks like a sieve.

Per Orangebloods, Texas has made TE Luke Ford a major priority right now after TE DW-A decommitted yesterday. Ford and family had a long talk with TE coach Meekins last night. Look for ford to officially visit to Texas at some point.

Good to hear about Ford. Texas needs to show a little improvement and it will be in a good spot, I haven't heard if Ford is a early signee or not.
