There is need for the average to be more than 2 children. Not all children will live to breed, or be able to. To prevent extinction the average MUST be more than 2.

This has resulted in some slow moving economically disastrous demographic trends that will play out over the next 20 years.
The worlds population needs to decrease so no people don’t need to average more than 2 kids.
We have more than enough resources for the current number of people, and quite a few more, if we were smarter about how we use our resources.
If you aren't familiar: look up Tragedy of the Commons, it is a useful concept when considering this and a lot of other economic/ecological issues.

Our population will fall naturally as Africa finally industrializes. Every single country that has industrialized to any degree has a negative birth rate, simply due to plain economic realities.
