old media heads and casual fans think Pop is having one of the best coaching seasons ever

The Spurs are 35-24 with a +3.1 point differential, ok. When you adjust their net rating (per 100 possessions) for quality of opponent, it comes to about 2.73 (7th in the league). OKC is at 3.25, Minnesota 3.01. Houston and Golden State are at 8.32 and 8.20, respectively. The Spurs are really the 5th best team in the Western Conference.

For comparison, last year's Spurs with Kawhi won 61 games with an adjusted net rating of 7.49. I think this year's team has had an appropriate drop-off without their superstar. No, Pop isn't doing miracles with Aldridge and a bunch of old role players. Doc has done better with LAC, tbqh. They're still an above average team despite not having Griffin or Paul anymore. And Stevens is straight up better than Pop. It's a miracle that Boston has a 40-19 record with their peripherals.

The Spurs record is a combination of weak schedule and a super weak conference outside Golden State and Houston. There is no way they're holding that three seed with 19 of the remaining 23 games against teams with winning records. The teams that used to be around that three seed were gutted in the last two years with Durant to GS and Paul to Houston, so the conference is basically Golden State, Houston, and then a bunch of 6 seeds and lotto teams. Try telling that to people upstairs though.

Clear indication of someone who never watches our games. Doc is still an awful coach, and now that Austin's back, we have nepotism costing us games again.

It's cute reading threads on RealGM and tweets applauding his job in getting SA the 3rd seed that they have by default, tbh

Also, he built the ty roster he's getting credit for coaching, which non-Spurs fans seem to ignore..

Spurs fans turning on Pop because of his political views is pretty hilarious tbh. Baseline Bum is right that being the 3 seed in the West means nothing but there there isn’t a coach out there who’d have them competing with Houston or Golden State so I don’t really get the criticism when he’s coaching them to their ceiling. Even with a weak conference and an easy schedule, there’s no way the average NBA coach would have this team close to a 3 seed. There’s also no valid criticism for last year when the Spurs looked like the one team that had a chance against Golden State before a dirty play.

There might be some bias from growing up in Phoenix watching him undress the Suns in the playoffs every year, but I’ve never seen a coach get more out of players than he has at any level.

    Yeah that's the reason.

People have had issues with Pop being done way before he started popping off when Trump took office a year ago. Get real.

Yeah. He doesn't watch enough Spurs games.

Between the constant inexplicable decision making on the court -which is seemingly every game now - to the poor decision making in the front office, Pop has been on the decline for a few years now. The political rants are just the diarrhea sauce on the sandwhich Pop has been serving up lately, tbh.

The in-game decisions are closer to a quarter by quarter basis tbh. Taking a player out who is 1) defending well and playing within the team on offense assisting etc, and/or to 2) a player who is scorching from the field...and replacing that with a player who hasn't entered the game (thus is cold) or is an absolute albatross on defense/rebounding.

    Every.Single.Game.

Part of the reason for being considered a great coach is knowing when to make decisions on the fly. Pop is out of touch with the roster he had a firm hand in building.

The narrative that he's this great coach who can get five scrubs out of the local rec center and coach them up to compete with greater compe ion is so absolutely flawed and always has been.
