Lost in all the shuffle about the Spurs having the highest pick they've had since Tim is them having the 49th pick the second round. I've talked a number of times about how having mid-seconds helps with flexibility. Obviously, having a second like 10-15 picks higher would be even better, but the 49th pick has legit value compared to their normal picks. Like 18 and 49 may get the team up to 16, 15 or 14, which can make the difference between getting the guy they want without having to commit a more valuable asset. 49 is also high enough to get future value in a trade, similar to how the Spurs turned the 2008 45 into the 2008 48 and the 2009 37. In other words, it could help the team get a collection of mid-seconds that end up being surprisingly helpful in roster-building.
Of course, the 49th pick also has its own draft value. Decent international prospects go in that range, and they may get a chance at the last of the red-flag college guys who have first-round talent.
