Yep, in big bold black letters is the history of the prison system here in America.
Robert Perkinson the author, the book was written in 2010.
There is a picture of a gang of black convicts digging a ditch on the cover, obviously an old picture. Bummer is the book didn't come with a CD about prisons, being a prisoner. Tons of songs out there about that experience.
I own what is considered the original "Black Betty", it was recorded in 1933 right there in Sugarland Prison. Ironhead Baker the lead singer with his fellow prisoners doing the background vocals. Amazing stuff.
Looking at the index for Angola Prison,(Louisiana) where Lead Belly and Robert Pete Williams were discovered I came across...

We do see Alan and John Lomax mentioned, they are the ones who found Lead Belly. Who is mentioned numerous times.
I hate to move books up ahead of what I had planned but I can't wait to delve into this one, so an exception to my rule. As soon as I finish The Midnight Line the latest Jack Reacher novel.

One of them the singer is singing all about going home, "I'm going home..I'm going home, I'm going home, I'm going home" after the song the guy recording him asks him..."so what were you thinking about there", he replies..."ah, well....going home".....hahaha!
Robert Pete Williams killed a man so he was sent to the infamous Angola Prison in Louisiana. This was recorded while he was there. He did get out and would sign a recording contract, he also played at blues festivals. He along with Texan Mance Lipscomb and Mississippi Fred McDowell were old enought to have recorded in the 30's but for some reason they didn't. They didn't show up until the late 50's/ early 60's.
This is famous in the blues world.

Do you know anything at all about the family behind TEXAS TOUGH trash bags? That was The Wahlberg family out of Shreveport Louisiana. The old man was a former piano player in New Orleans, played with Bunk Johnson. His wife was in charge of a house in Worthing Texas. So tell us how they got into the trash bag business.
