The article mentions he's continuously working out in San Antonio, and it's one month until training camp.

A compromise would be to announce his retirement after this season, and then the entire league can celebrate him for every game in his swan season.
I fully expect a generous applause and appreciation at every final road opponent after he declares it being his final season.

He's an icon for the game.

the negative is that we would miss his veteran presence. the positive is that it will give younger players more rotation minutes in what will be a year where a le or contention is out of the question anyway.
    Agree.

In reality, Manu is less motivated to return with his long-time running mate, fellow Hall of Famer and, yes, good friend in Charlotte.

Oh the irony for Manufans the world over.
    Say it louder, please!

Lol Manu dragging this out. Not amusing for an over-the-hill bench player.

Unrelated, I wonder if he'll make Pop fly to Argentina to meet with him.

It’s clearly about his role and the teams plan for this season...
Manu's role hasn't changed for like a decade. There's no reason to even ask at this point. Unless Manu straight-up doesn't want to play a lot of games or something, he's going to be part of the team's plans.

That's dumb, fans shouldn't be content with mediocrity and an unwatchable product..

Go cheer for the Magic or Hawks for a couple years, and let us know how you feel about our "unwatchable product".

I see no middle ground for this team. I think we're either a top 2-3 seed or miss the play-off altogether.

He has the rest of his life to do everything else. This isnt your typical job or typical player either, it's something that he truly loves, that he has dedicated his entire life to, and that has set him and his family up for life. It'll probably hit him super hard when it's over.
Eh, I agree, but then I don't. When you can't find someone to sign you, there is the realization that it is over. But when you walk away, you have your reasons, and so no regrets. If he walks away, he does it with no regrets and moves to the next stage of his life. I don't think Kobe looks like he's been hit super hard. I think Kobe is doing things he loves now that he isn't playing in the NBA. And I think Kobe is a good comp for Manu (other than the raping) because I think he had the same passion for the game, even if it was expressed in different ways.

I'm surprised you are not a Laker fan since your god Lebron is now over there. Lakers should be a very entertaining product to watch the next few years with all the comedy Lebron and company will provide.

Way to go out on a limb there. "I'd say we're about a 37 to 60 win team. Anything outside of that I'd be surprised."

I’d imagine it takes a deep look into one’s soul to sign on for an NBA season at age 41.
The wear and tear on these guys is incredible. Recovering in the off-season is vital and unpredictable.
My guess is that Manu is carefully gauging how his body is responding to workouts and
that he wants to be in sync with the new team if he plays. He probably doesn’t know yet.

I’m not ready to let go of all the glory years just yet.

If it does happen, like Parker, it'll be bittersweet. The positive will be White assuming a role he should have had anyway, while Forbes and Walker likely move up another rung.

Let's just hope they don't sign some veteran retread (Afflalo, Brewer, Henderson, etc.) to compete with White and play ahead of Forbes and Walker. If they want another body, it should be a youngish type (Blossomgame, Brown, Huestis, Paul, etc.)

Well, the loss of Tony and Manu was inevitable. Losing Kawhi and Danny so unexpectedly is definitely going to sting for the next season or more.

It'll be sad just like with Tony, but this is a bridge the team needs to cross eventually. And they have three young, hungry guards that could be the next generation...

Yeah, I don't get this notion that they need him as some sort of bridge. If you just want to watch his genius for as long as possible, I get that. But him coming back for another season isn't changing anything culturally or in some intangible way that's going to manifest itself in future iterations.

As I always knew and many have now found out, your best player(s) are your culture and system. One more season of Ginobili wasn't changing that, neither is however many more of Pop, Mills, etc.

DeRozan, a man who is acting like he's the first player in the history of pro sports to get traded..he's on a depression tour across the continent, crying to anybody that will listen.
I don't know why some are spinning this. I got sick of hearing about it fast too, but DeRozan was/is hurt about what he perceived as being lied to . . . though I'm sure his ego is also bruised by this being half salary dump, since everyone knows there's a good chance Leonard leaves in a year.

I agree. I also believe the compe or in him cannot take being benched for games. He will have to work tirelessly to be ready to play and if he does not play he will struggle to cope watching games, being with teammates, etc... At 41, no Duncan, no Ginobili, tons of new faces, I don't blame him at all. Pop is probably monitoring his workouts and giving him the honest truth on whether he can play this year too. Ginobili will have to almost clearly outplay Rudy Gay, Bertans, Belinelli, Mills, Cunningham to play in that back up SF/SG spot. The reason it is probably a sensitive subject is because all these players are coming to the Spurs hoping to get minutes and have the team take care of them. Tough call. I know Pop and Ginobili will make the right one.

I think Pop really needs his presence with all the new kids we have and the dude can still play. The thing is that Manu LOVES the game and it’s a HUGE deal to give up what you love. I would hope that Pop is telling him to play one more year and then join him as assistant coach after this season ends.

When Manu leaves, that's it. That's the end of an era folks... it's up to Manu really. He deserved, just like Timmy deserved it, just like Parker deserves it too, to go your own way.
