Kansas- 11.9% below the poverty line. Awful state economy.

California- 21% below the poverty line. Best state economy. Massive surplus and massive taxes.

    But, Kansas, right?

Doesn't matter who runs things and how things appear on paper. Proportionately, the biggest blue state with the most income and wealth of any state has twice the volume of impoverished people.
California overregulating everything and choking the supply of housing to make it unaffordable doesn’t change anything about how much of a disaster the Kansas tax cuts were. I’m in 100% agreement that California takes it way too far to the other end.

That poverty line is going to explode with Gavin Newsome as our new Governor. There's probably never been a bigger bootlicker so intent on carrying out an agenda to hurt it's people so much. I don't even think Himler would have been the equivalent to Gavin "Going to pump Billions into a dead train project because I'm supposed to" Newsome.

The taxes/spending in California don’t bother me as much as the overregulation does. Vermont is even worse. The occupancy rate across all multi family housing in the Burlington area is over 99% because of how cost prohibitive new construction is, and even if you buy the tiest, smallest house, be prepared to drop at least $300k.

I agree to an extent with the tax cuts. But even with that, 11.9% poverty for a state that doesn't have much of an economy compared to most states and that 11.9% poverty rate isn't even bottom half of poverty rates. So, while it failed a bit, their motive was intended to help people. And it hasn't crippled the state in the sense that a lot of people are making it out to.

Now, compared to California, our politicians pass laws and measures because, like with the tax cuts, are designed to help people, California has the resources and finances to help the problems of crime, homelessness and poverty, but dont. The minimum wage increase forced 250k jobs minimum over state borders and they do nothing, absolutely NOTHING to help with housing and now that the little cities that are completely forgotten and ignored by CA politicians are standing their ground against the bully metro areas, the public is seeing how much a mess this place is.

Here's the thing with California Democrats and why their the worst bunch of politicians on the planet- their bigger thieves overall than the got in office. But their career politicians, so they can rob us and keep a smile on their face while they do it. Tens of billions into a train system where nothing physical or tangible really exists, they're going to divert all the farmland water down south and into the ocean, as they've done the last four years while farmers struggle and who needs food anyways, right?

This place is worse than Kansas unless you're a politician or rich. But, they can go to the media and boast their state economy and surplus...you're going to have that when you're literally killing your middle class.

The only other state that cares less about their people than California is Michigan.

Imo you can’t just look at poverty line and I disagree that the tax cuts were done in good faith. Brownback was a for the Koch brothers and him slashing taxes was a quid pro quo for them getting him elected. The big tax cuts in Kansas were also given to corporations and businesses, not individuals. Income taxes on LLC income were thrown out completely for example. That doesn’t benefit the people living at or near the poverty line.

The tax cuts also created a huge budget deficit for Kansas that’s going to take years to pay off.

I’m not saying that to dispute California though, to be clear. The tax rates in California are offensive imo. A guy who makes 50k a year having a 9.3% tax rate is crippling vs. someone who makes $1mm a year having a 13.3% tax rate. Their tax code absolutely rapes the middle class.

There's more taxes still coming and that is something our Governor elect drove home.

Honestly, they need to increase property taxes here. They're abysmally small, which is one of the few advantages of owning a home here. But the bubble is going to burst here very soon.

In 2010, we almost bought a home here, the market had bottomed out. We're talking homes no older than 3 years old were going for $100-125k and by 2016 those homes had tripled in price and now the cost of these homes is nearing a half million for 3 bed, 2 bath track homes in parts of Cali.

And there's the water theft and the complete illegality of it all and how brazen they are about it.

Like I said, the better thieves are the politicians who have been in the game longest. They're better at packaging and selling bull to their people.

"I'm gonna go in the Kansas thread and see if we can talk about stuff that's not Kansas"

yeah i'm not even dreaming about buying a home anytime soon ... i'd need several 100k down just to knock on the door, and even then you have to compete with full cash offers from investors.

    then again, i'm in LA

How long did you live in LA before you fully were acclimated to the smog? Like how long before the smog stopped bothering you and it just felt normal?

I still can't get over it. Pass Fresno and come over the Mountains thru Grapevine into the Valley and *bam* everything is three shades darker and things look like their matte finished. I've spent weeks down there and still can't get over it.

You think the smog is your ally? You merely adopted the smog. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the sky until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding!

i know ur gonna kill me but we'd prefer to stay local ... easier to be around family/friends. especially if we're planning on having a kid during her 4th year of school or somethin.

second choice would be going to norcal because stanford is a ing amazing school and i wouldn't have to take a different bar exam.

after that, probably cleveland because the school is great and cost of living is minimal. she hated St Louis, liked boston, and thought syracuse was boring af.
