The UK did an extraordinarily stupid thing. No forward thinking about the ramifications of leaving the EU just because they thought their sovereignty was at stake. This is possibly worse than having Donald Trump as president.

The EU has made it very clear that it doesn't want the UK to leave and it's negotiating with that position in mind. A "Brexit in name only" would be a victory for it, and if the UK isn't willing to risk a "no deal" then a "Brexit in name only" may be the only deal that the UK can get. PM May doesn't seem at all willing to risk a no deal especially because the EU has sent so many signals that it would use its size to make the UK pay badly for it (like talks of not even letting UK planes land in the EU, UK medical supply shortages, etc.).
