According to Simmons they offered Simmons a similar contract but he chose the Magic because of his role. It's obvious now Simmons is only a bench player on a good team but I dont blame him for wanting to get his opportunity. Looks like Magic want to move him and keep Terence Ross. The Spurs should trade for him tbh. His contract is friendly.

Hmm. I guess I remembered the articles wrong. It was definitely a bit ambiguous on what exactly went down but after rereading these articles it looks like Simmons asked the Spurs to pull the qualifying offer to let him be an unrestricted free agent which is why the quote would make more sense. Most were thinking Spurs would resign him but him being 27 or 28 and Spurs not willing to promise him a committed role it looks like he pleaded with them to pull the offer and Pop relented. It probably allowed teams the green light to go after him knowing the Spurs couldn't just match a deal afterwards. Simmons at that price looked like a steal.

well I'm thinking they didn't want to resign him at all, but that's also a possibility. I guess we'll never know

If that were the case, they never would have made the QO.

The Spurs rarely decide against QOing someone who's made it to the end of a contract. I'm having a hard time thinking of one. Obviously, if the team hated him, they would have traded or cut him. But I doubt Jon was actually part of what they wanted to do. Rather, they probably just wanted the option there in case they traded away some wings or had an S&T to work.

If I remember correctly the QO was a laughable, disrespecting number. It was a case of due diligence. They really didn't care if Simmons left, but they had the QO option so they said "what the heck, we know there's no way we can keep him for this price but we wouldn't be doing our job if we don't at least excercise our option".
