    no, he couldn’t go to jail for that, but the contract could be voided and he could get a lifetime suspension + breach of contract lawsuit. There wouldn’t be any criminal liability.

    Pro athletes are so ing pampered and insulated. Almost any other career, there would be criminal/fraud implications

    No there wouldn’t be, it’s not like fraud laws are different for athletes. All he’d be doing is breaching a contract and the collective bargaining agreement which doesn’t carry and criminal liability.
