Why? They can trade him for garbage any time they want.

    Two fold message:
    1) players league. Bend over
    2) do what the lakers want you to do.

Also, why would they ever let the GM they were about to fire make the biggest move in franchise history?

He was going to be fired regardless. He's a horrible GM tbh. Even if Davis is overrated a bit you still have to get him in the playoffs more than twice in 7 years. That being said, he went out giving the middle finger to the media and the Lakers. Made him look like a boss while his now sympathetic figure will overshadow how bad he was at his job.

If Demps could have saved his job by taking the Lakers deal he would have done it. The same offer will be available this summer as well, Demps didn’t cost them anything.

The minute AD demanded a trade he put them in full rebuilding mode and made Demps and Gentry lameducks. There was no way the Pelicans were going to let the same GM and coach lead the rebuilding process after they failed to put a compe ive team around AD.

He definitely wasn’t a great GM but it would have been really difficult to put a compe ive team around AD. The Pelicans were never going to be drawing big name free agents, so he basically had to either draft other stars to put around Davis or have enough assets to trade for one, the problem with both of those routes being that the 2013 - 2016 draft classes all sucked.

This. Why are people saying he got fired for not taking the lakers trash offer, or that lebrons piece of agent got him fired? If the owners really liked that offer they'd have simply overruled him or fired him before the deadline and made the deal.

Plus now is actually the right time to fire a GM for a team in the Pels situation. No point in waiting til the offseason.

Buddy Hield seems like he's very good now based on scoring and shooting stats and he basically punted on him to get 1 year or whatever of cousins. then he let cousins walk for nothing

We'll take Gentry as an assistant. He's a good coach who seems to get caught up on the crappiest teams (Phoenix with like 5 point guards, etc)

It's not Demps' fault Cousins tore his achilles though. I wouldn't have thrown long term money at him after that either.

Yeah, cousins wasn't a good fit with Anthony Davis in today's NBA anyway but this is more about that turning one good draft pick into nothing

They were actually starting to play well before Cousins got hurt, would have been interesting..

Demps sucks, but he's had a lot of injuries to deal with over the years, they've rarely been healthy..that Solomon Hill deal is still puzzling, though

Firing Demps isn’t enough. They need a new President of basketball operations, a VP, GM, assistant GM, Head Coach.

I see this as a move to try and keep AD or at least convince him this team will have a bright future and is on the right path with a new GM. They will lay all the problems on the job Demp's did for sure. AD is still likely to be traded this summer but Pelicans will likely give it one last shot, this move signals it. I don't think it matters though Davis wants out.

Demps should have taken that Lakers deal though, I see that as the reason they fired him.

Now AD looks like a team cancer out there.

Why should he have taken the Lakers deal right away before hearing Boston's offer? He can get the Lakers trash in the summer too.

The fact that New Orleans has an NBA team is problematic enough. They've always been . They go to OKC for a few months and suddenly OKC is a 10x better basketball city than New Orleans.

The NBA needs to re-examine their market locations.
