    Magic, Manu, Shaq.

Those are just some of the nicknames that come to mind as iconic. The type of nicknames that are used more than their actual names.
    manu and shaq

what's next, Steve Nash instead of his full name of Stephen Nash?

Those are nicknames, tbh. Whether you like it or not.

Also, if you say "Steve", you will need to explain who you are talking about. Most people won't immediately asociate Steve to Nash.

Nicknames like Magic, Manu and Shaq don't need further explanation.

well if i say Tim Duncan you know I'm actually talking about Timothy Theodore Duncan.

just because shaquille and emannuel are very uncommon names in basketball doesnt automatically turn those into nicknames. a lot of guys like kobe, lebron, dirk are instantly recognizable by their first names... but only because they're uncommon. not because they're "nicknames"

But Dirk and Kobe aren't nicknames. Shaq and Manu are.

Even if you do consider them nicknames, why would you think “Manu” or “Shaq” are all that great anyway? All they are are abbreviations of the actual names.

”Best” nicknames, right? Do you think “Steph” is a great nickname? “LMA” evoke wit or excitement? “Zo” make you go, wow, I can’t believe people took the last two letters of “Lonzo” and call him that. What a great nickname...

The Glide is a cool ass name.

I remember I had NBA live and it allowed you to make your own player, complete with a nickname that the announcer used. I was the ATM

And when it didn’t know people’s shortened names it used their whole name. So playing as the Spurs it was like

    Hidayayy Turk-o-lueeeeee

    Rod-o-slavvvvv Nesssssterooovichhhh

    Emmannuellll Gin-o-beeee-leeee

The one other person I know named Emanuel also goes by Manu, it's an abbreviation that's very common for that name.

Why are you bent on defending this position

He had stone hands against 28 other teams but became an offensive rebounding magnet playing against the Suns.

Nah, I'm just having fun with the people arguing my correct technicality, tbh.
