Blake is your guy
on the relationship between the two sports. Who are the preeminent football and track experts here?
Blake is your guy
F-F-F-F-F-Football is the d-d-d-d-devil!
I think there are a lot of football experts around here with some knowing more than others about certain aspects.
But if you're looking for someone that can talk these things:
- historically black college running backs in the nfl
- speedsters of the nfl
- tight ends of the 1980s
Then you've come to the right place
SFS for track and Blake for Football tbh
Here are my credentials.
Subscriber to Track & Field News magazine since 1966.
Have seen every Olympics since 1964
Keep a notebook with over 70 schools that have at least two
sub10.30
sub21.00
sub47.00
sub 14.00
over 25 feet
athletes
I have my own track fantasy track meets.
Was the mod at the world famous SUB10 messageboard.
Can list every track athlete of note that ever competed. Go back to the days of Lon Myers in the late 1800's, all he did was hold the American record in the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and the mile.
I have no equal anywhere when it comes to the who, what, where, and when pertaining to track & field
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I start in 1920 when it comes to pro football and day one of college football. Can talk all the teams, all the players all the divisions. Can talk players nobody here has ever heard of like Big Ben Stevenson out of Tuskegee Ins ute. Saw my first televised games around 1959, my first football hero....Willie Galimore.
TONS of books on football.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Then there is that track/football connection. We have seen TONS of track athletes also play football.
Olympians who played pro football. Will ignore....Jimmy Hines, Tommie Smith, Frank Budd, Ray Norton, they were just failed experiments.
Stone Johnson Chiefs/Grambling.....died from injuries in a preseason game, what might have been
Ollie Matson Rams/USF
Bob Hayes Cowboys/FAMU
Henry Carr Giants/ASU........brought in the cover Hayes
Trenton Jackson Eagles/Illinois
Gerald Tinker Falcons/Kent St
Larry Burton Saints/Purdue
Bo Roberson Raiders/Cornell.....the first speedy Raider, was a long jumper
Ron Brown Rams/ASU
James Jett Raiders/WV
Michael Bates Seahawks/Arizona
Sam Graddy Broncos/Tenn
Johnny Jones Jets/Texas
Milt Campbell Browns/Indiana
Marquise Goodwin Bills
There is nobody in cyper space who can beat me in track/football trivia, I cannot be beat. OBVIOUSLY me vs this place would be a laughter, I'm on a whole higher level.
Now who would be dumb enought to challenge me in track/football trivia, let me guess......nobody.

Blake, this is really easy for a guy who knows HBCU track.
When Oly 100m champ Jimmy Hines ran at Texas Southern this is the 4x1 team he anchored.
Arnoldo Bristol....Bobby Evans...Clyde Duncan...Jimmy Hines
BUT....both Grambling and Southern U also had stud 4x1 teams, go ahead and list just who was on those teams.
And.....when Bullet Bob Hayes was at FAMU he ran on a 4x1 team with two other pro footballers to be and the guy who was the first to beat him in HS. Who was on this team?
When Bullet Bob was in the NFL, there were two fellow players that had beaten him at 200m in college, who?

There have been three college 4x1 teams where at least three of the sprinters would go on to play pro football. What three schools?
The only white sprinter to beat Bob Hayes?

“credentials”![]()
Where is that actually at? I've never seen it, and neither has anyone else.
Show me what you are talking about, ok?
Maybe....experience....was a better word. Bottom line......can kick ass on anyone challenging me.....would win any track/football trivia contest vs anyone. Yep, really that good.
Just saw this on the NFL Network (seen it before)
NFL Top 10 Speedsters.
10.Chris Johnson
9. Michael Vick
8. Joey Galloway
7. Cliff Branch
6. Willie Gault
5. Bo Jackson
4. Randy Moss
3. Deion Sanders
2. Bob Hayes
1. Darrell Green
I get that was done years ago, before Trindon Holliday, Jacoby Ford, Tyreek Hill.
But.....that list is so wrong it's cartoonish. Where is Olympic 100m silver medalist Sam Graddy? Where is Olympic 10om 4th placer Ron Brown? Herschel Walker would smoke both Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, they ran 10.33 and 10.26, Walker at...10.23? Randy Moss over World record holder at 9.1 yards...Willie McGee? No James Jett who ran on our Olympic 4x1?
There is noway in Darrel Green who couldn't even win the NCAA is faster than Olympic 100m gold medalist and WR holder Bob Hayes. Hayes ran his 10.06 PR on a bad dirt track in 1964, Green ran his 10.08 some 20ish years later on a far superior track.
Here is the real list (using the time they used)
10.James Trapp 10.14
9.James Jett 10.16
8.Curtis ey 10.11........only NFL RB to ever be world ranked at 100m (while at Tex A&M)
7.Willie Gault 10.10
6.Darrell Green 10.08
5.Willie McGee WR 9.1
4.Cliff Branch 9.2 yards
3.Ron Brown 10.06
2.Sam Graddy Olympic silver medal 10.09
1.Bob Hayes Olympic gold medal 10.06
All those guys were great college sprinters, something Chris Johnson, Deion Sanders, Joey Galloway, Randy Moss weren't.
Hayes 10.06 on dirt some 50ish years ago the best 100m ever ran by any NFLer, yep, superior to the 10.00 by Trindon Holliday. Jim Hines did run a 9.95 in 68 but that was al ude aided and he was a bust anyway.
The fastest 100m ever ran by anyone who played college/NFL football was a 9.91 by Tennessee's Leonard Scott. The Steelers gave him a shot, a bust.
The fastest HS kid has to be Baker HS RB Houston McTear. As just a junior he ran a 9.0 100 yards, which tied the WR, and his still the WR, that was in the 70's.
BUT....the fastest athlete to ever carry a football at any level has to be Christian Coleman the current WR holder in the 60 and the current fastest man in the world. He has also ran a 4.12 40. He stopped playing football after HS, he knew track was his sport. He also went to Tennessee (as did Justin Gatlin)
Christian Coleman breaking Mo Greenes 60m WR.
As just a college kid he beat the great Usain Bolt.

Wait what? What da does the bolded part mean? Please elaborate these fantasy track meets? Does that consist of you going down to to the local middle school and watching the girls track team?
Glad you asked.
I keep index cards on all the NCAA schools that meet my criteria of.

That is a dual meet obviously, I will have quads.
Over 70 schools I have on index cards. But can do it all by memory, just like I just did.
Imagine this fantasy meet.
NCA&T
CPSLO
Azusa Pacific
Jackson State
Started doing this in 1966, back then I only had a few schools I could use, one of those was San Jose State, a true track power back in the day, yep....Tommie Smith and John Carlos,
Last edited by Avant; 03-17-2019 at 05:59 PM.
that might legitimately be the most pathetic thing I have ever heard of. Whatever makes you happy though Larry.
How about this one.
Take all the pro rasslers you can think of, in my case over 2000 (notable). I am talking from Ed "Strangler" Lewis up to Kenny Omega. Take index cards, get a ruler and make squares, now write in....Lou Thesz, Killer Kowalski, Alistar Black, A.J.Styles, Smasher Sloan, Moose Cholak, etc etc etc, over 2000. Now cut them out and toss those squares in a coffee can.
16 man tourney (picking names out of the can)
Ravishing Rick Rude vs Magnum T.A.
Ole Anderson vs Prince Maivia............grandpa of The Rock
Wild Red Berry vs Gory Guerrero....father of Mondo, Hector, Chavo, Eddie, grandfather of Chavo JR
Ciclon Negro vs Waldo Von Erich....fake relative of Fritz
Gorgeous George vs Bulldog Brower
Samson Burke vs Ray "Thunder" Stern
Don Leo Jonathan vs Bad News Brown
Abdullah the Butcher vs Hercules Ayala
The winners move on to round two
There are all kinds of games to be played there.
Like I have said I only have a few interests but the ones I do have I have 100%/totally/completely covered.
Combining track/football/blues/rasslin', as that combo I honestly doubt anyone could beat meet in trivia if using that combo.
I go back to the very beginning on all of them, have done all the work that can be done, have read everything that should have been read. I have never met anyone any place (internet) who can hang with me if talking trivia, if talking my pet interests.

SFS wouldn't make a zit on my butt when it comes to any of that and everybody knows this. That's why this is so damn entertaining/funny. All the ways around.....ok ok Avant you are freakish when it comes to that , never seen anything like it........ha~~~~
Last edited by Avant; 03-17-2019 at 06:16 PM.
A fantasy 4x1 team for all 32 NFL teams, who can do that out there?
Example
Niners...Renaldo Nehemiah...Marquis Goodwin....Deion Sanders....Ray Norton (WR9.3 Olympian)
Well?
How ing funny is this?
Poster...so who can talk the speed of Herschel Walker?
Avant....while at Georgia he ran a 10.23 which is amazing for a 225 pound athlete. He would make the finals of the NCAA.
SFS...he was big and fast
Poster......damn SFS, how do you do that? Great stuff, thanks SFS.

Sigh. Larry, no need to campaign. You lost the election.
And the court case.
