In each survey, Gallup asks U.S. adults whether they identify politically as Republicans, Democrats or independents. Those who say they are independent are then asked whether they lean more to the Democratic or Republican Party. The measure reported here combines the percentage of identifiers and leaners for each party.

Correct. There's a given amount that said independent AND also said they don't identify with Dems or Republicans, which is what's labeled as independents.

In the Fox Poll, there is a definite Independent breakdown which broke half don't know (6%), quarter Dem (3%) and quarter Rep (3%) - on the impeachment question. And it seems to me that a large percentage of people these days are claiming that they are independents. And of course, I again fully admit - being D,R or I does not necessarily mean you want impeachment/removal - just that that 12%I seems low to me.

What the Party Affiliation poll says is that while people might not register as a party voter (thus registered as independent), that doesn't mean they don't lean one way or another.

Ultimately, the breakdown isn't really important unless you want to make a case specifically about partisanship.
