    FAIL

if you going to blame the PM, you should also blame ur state government, they had the opportunity to co-operate with the other 2 southern states to build a pipeline that would channel most of queenslands flood waters to the other states storages running low on water. Both levels of govts are slow to react on aid and to the ppl out there in the community affected by the floods.

this will hurt queensland and australias economy, but it aint that bad imo.

i guess this country is not mentally and physically prepared for this type natural disasters even after learning from usa katrina, or the victorian bushfires....we aint a 3rd world country, we should be well equip to handle this , but we waste more time talking a load of horse then implementing solutions to the problems due to govt red tape and bull from stake holders.
    Amen, brother.

The analysis I have read is that it will hit the Australian economy to the tune of 1% of GDP.

The economic impact is likely to be harsh, on best guesses cutting Australian growth this year by up to 1%.
Queensland, like Western Australia, had been enjoying a boom, fuelled by commodities. It accounts for three-fifths of Australia’s black-coal exports. Many mines have now been flooded, and railway lines ruined. Sugar cane and cotton, two other big commodities, have been badly hit. The prime minister, Julia Gillard, has promised any money needed to help rebuild Queensland’s infrastructure. Yet she also insists that her pre-flood pledge to bring the federal budget into surplus by 2012-13 still stands. Like the Wivenhoe dam, something may have to give.

It never ceases to amaze me why people build in known flood plains. Just because it hasn't flooded in 35 years, and the Realtor convinces you it's a "100 year flood" doesn't man .

I feel for the people, but more so for their lack of intelligence.

It is possible to build houses on sealed caissons that float.

The plumbing and so forth comes with flexible joinst that allow the house to rise.

The Dutch are building homes that will float off their foundations during floods:

whats ed up now is the insurance companys not payin up to ppl not insured under flood, cause the definition of flood in insurance law is not properly described, now taxpayers have to foot the bill to those affected...

lol at the clowns who took advantage of the govt handouts of $1000 and blowing it on booze and pokies...

Someone explain to me the reasoning behind just sitting there, waiting for these catastrophic floods to reach you and ask for people to pray for your well being... GET THE OUT OF THERE! Get to somewhere safe. I don't get it.

My best wishes to all the Aussies on SpursTalk, especially those of you in QLD. I lived in Sydney for over a year and loved it, but Queensland what my favorite part of OZ.
