Shaq had to retire early because of having to carry Kobrick's ass for so long. Its no wonder Shaq started having back, knee, and ankle problems. When Kobrick got shut down by Austin Chrosure in the 2000 Finals.....Shaq had to put up numbers that may never be seen again in the NBA Finals by any position player.
Why because Shaq said so? MJ was already Superman, and it wasn't self glossed, and he didn't cry when Shaq stole it from him.

In the three Finals wins from 2009-2002, Shaquille averaged 35 and 16. He was clearly unstoppable. Any two guard in the league could have won three rings on those Shaq-led teams. The two guard who happened to play for them at the time was K. Bryant.
That's all. Nothing more. He was the starting two guard who was lucky enough to coattail three rings.
Then he was egomaniacal enough to have Shaquille shipped out of town. And Laker management was dumb enough to actually do it.
Then Bryant rewarded Laker management by forcing himself on a young woman in Colorado. And for some unconscionable reason, he mentioned Shaquille's name when talking with the Eagle police.

Perhaps Kobe holds the grudge because Shaq was a lazy clown and was still better than him no matter how hard he worked? Kobe is an ultra compe ive dude and to keep having to play second fiddle to a guy that just doesn't have to work hard to be dominant must be infuriating because no matter how hard he was working on his game.... the proof was in the pudding. Shaq was the better of the two.

What? It was a Jim and Jeanie combo decision on doing what they thought their dad would do. I'd find it hard to believe that they never talked about resigning Kobe at any time in the years before Dr Buss died. (If you think they're lying or just mistaken)

Im sure Dr. Buss said a few years before his death he would like Kobe to retire a Laker. I'm also sure Kobe used that as a bargaining chip being the "business man" that he is. However, poor Dr. Buss was busy dealing with cancer which is a horrible way to die, from what reports indicated in the last year of his life he was hardly 'there'.
So basically Dr. Buss never really got to watch Kobe past 2012, I doubt he knew exactly how badly Kobe would deteriorate by 2014. I am confident he would not have made that decision.
