    Bill-

Sorry I took a while to get to these questions. You're a smart guy and probably know as much as I do when it comes to these scenarios. The fact that Texas just offered ATH Daniel Brooks of Rockdale because of his multi-faceted game and RB DJ Monroe being the name that Harsin/Applewhite have mentioned multiple times this offseason tells me that RB Dontre Wilson will be getting an offer in February. He's capable of doing mutiple things for a football team and he's a DeSoto product. Those guys come out of the birth canal flashing the "Hook 'Em."

As far as a pure RB, I'm confident saying RB James White of Pearland Dawson is #1 on the recruiting board right now and the staff surely scored some points yesterday with the commitment of OL Kennedy Estelle, but you never know who will pop on the scene at any given time (much like RB Trey Williams did last summer). I take comfort in the fact Major Applewhite lives to evaluate and Bryan Harsin knows what he wants for his offense, so you can be assured that they will have covered everyone once it comes to time to make an offer.

I don't think there's a definitive answer for either position because the staff's course of action will depend on the decisions of certain prospects. For example, we all knew that the staff was targeting one QB and one RB for the 2012 class; nothing more and nothing less. Once they got commitments from their targets, things were shut down at those respective positions. It was pretty clear cut. For OL and DB, timing will obviously be a huge factor in determining what the numbers look like in the end.

To elaborate...I think this weekend is big for the OL. If OL Tre'Von Armstead of Port Arthur Memorial shows up to J12 like he plans, it's very possible he gets offered. He's been the Michael Starts back-up plan for a few weeks now. If he gets offered and farts around for a while or ends up being a no-show this weekend, the staff could say "screw it" and decide to go balls out for OL Andrus Peat and OL John Theus until the very end hoping that they land one of the two. If they're getting negative vibes by the time the season starts then they can revisit the lower hanging fruit at that time. What happens with Armstead will determine the final number on the OL, IMO. I don't think Searels likes Brantley or Myers enough to offer. More contact with a guy like OL Kyle Fuller of Wylie could really change things as well, but he'll hurt his chances if he doesn't make it to campus this summer.

For the DBs, I think UT is looking for two more. If you get a commitment from a guy like DB Geno Smith before the season starts, that number could change. Another scenario is UT misses on Smith, offers DB Justin Thomas and he commits on the spot. What if ATH Kendall Sanders finally comes around on the idea of playing DB and wants to punch his ticket as well? Are you going to tell him no? That's two right there. What if ATH Nelson Agholor is still on the table at that time? You simply can't stop recruiting a game-changing five-star like that. If by some divine intervention he picks Texas, that bumps you up to three. I know I'm rambling but as you can see it can go about umpteen different ways right now as every prospect has their own timetable and decisions to make which will ultimately affect everyone else (see Westerman vs. Hegarty, 2011).
TFloss thank you for the compliment. I do consider myself a bright guy, but I'll defer to you in Texas recruiting matters.

I agree Texas should offer Dontre Wilson to fill the DJ Monroe role. Harsin seems to like to have a burner scat back in his offense. Wilson is interested in Oregon, but I still think Texas is the leader.

If Texas truly wants Brooks as a utility back, it's a matter of time before he switches to Texas.

I trust Harsin and Applewhite, James White seems to be their guy for 2013. I think Texas should take a another every down back in 2013, but 2 running backs in addition to Dontre Wilson could be a tough sell.

I hope both Fuller and Armstead make it to camp this weekend. 247 currently has Armstead as an "outside chance" of attending J12. I have no idea what Armstead is thinking. He'll likely receive an offer, and he can't bother showing up?

I like the staff's possible approach of offering Armstead, and if not, going all out with Peat and Theus. There could always be an OT late bloomer in the fall.

Thank goodness Searels didn't offer Brantley or Seaver Myers this weekend. From some reports, Searels gave Brantley a long, hard look, but wasn't convinced. Brantley allegedly is a heavy Oklahoma State lean.

The DB recruitment seems extremely fluid. I think Colin Blake, not Justin Thomas should be the next in state player in line for a Texas offer.

At this point, I'd be pretty surprised if Sanders reversed gears and agreed to play DB. He holds an offer from a Big 12 team on the rise that swears up and down that he's the next Dez Bryant.

Sanders sounds like a great kid, but he's putting Texas in a difficult position. Let's say Sanders signs with Texas as WR and is buried on the depth chart as a sop re. Texas approaches him in the spring to move to DB, Sanders says no thanks and asks for a transfer. Texas would get absolutely nothing out of Sanders in that plausible scenario. Too risky in a very tight scholarship year.

I didn't see Landon Collins mentioned. Does Texas have a shot? The SEC quotes are pretty damning of Texas' chances. You still bring him in a for a visit, but Collins seems to be drinking the SEC sweet iced tea.

Ketch thinks the Texas staff is looking to take 20 - 21 players in the 2012 class. That's 4 scholarships left if true. If Brooks commits, that's 18. If Armstead is offered and commits at J12, that's 19. Danielle Hunter could also get an offer and accept this month, that's 20. Scholarships could be very, very tight going into July.

I didn't ignore Blake or Collins purposely. Just trying to give everyone different scenarios to show how many directions the DB situation could go. Texas is in good position with Blake should they offer, but I don't have much hope for Collins. He's been living under LSU's shadow for a couple of years now and he'll be a tough pull. He's a complete badass but I'd rather have Agholor if given a choice between the two. A trip to Austin in July could change a lot and he'll be heavily recruited by the UT commitments at the 2012 Under Armour All-American Game should he still be undecided at that time. I know he's said that's the date he'd like to make a decision because it's his birthday. Hopefully he'll have two visits to campus under his belt by that time with an unofficial this summer and an official visit in the fall.

Agholor would fit Akina's 4 cornerbacks secondary better than Collins.

I'm starting to agree with the consensus that Brooks is being recruited as a utility back. Why would Texas coaching staff offer Brooks over Colinn Blake if they were looking strictly for a DB? I don't think they would.

Considering the great recruiting momentum that the staff has with a lot of studs right now, I don't see how they stop at that low of a number unless they make the decision to simply cut things off. Couple that with a respectable season for UT and the staff could see a few more guys wanting to jump aboard than they originally thought. Plus, they're not going to stop recruiting or turn down commitments from any of the five-star prospects until they hear "no."

Last year's class was supposed to stop at that number as well, but it blossomed to 23 with a chance to land a 24th in DE Brandon Alexander at the end of the cycle. UT obviously didn't get Alexander and a decommitment from OL Christian Westerman saw the class fall back to 22. I think the staff just stopping at 20 or 21 would be doing themselves a disservice after top notch effort these past few months.

Good to hear. Yeah I thought Ketch's number was a little low. I think this class will be closer to 23.

I think Harsin has special plans for Brooks should he commit to the good guys. I don't buy that he's being recruited specifically as a DB even though he could end up there at some point. The staff has already recruited two undersized guys in DB Bryson Echols and ATH Orlando Thomas. They want size like Smith, Blake or Agholor for the last one or two spots. If DB Justin Thomas ends up with an offer down the road, it's either because the staff missed on Smith or he's simply too good to pass up despite his size. J12 will be big for him.

Great quote from DT Paul Boyette, Jr. on OL Kennedy Estelle's commitment:

"It was good. We have been asking him to come with us and telling him that’s where he needed to be, and today was the day he finally figured it out. We were laughing and joking around like we are brothers already and we are. It’s a family atmosphere. He had fun today."

Per Hook 'Em 24/7, DE Torshiro Davis of Shreveport, LA is not in Austin today. He's actually attending a camp in Tuscaloosa right now and will be in town later this week. Not sure if this was part of the plan all along or things changed last minute since this goes against what's been reported for about a week now. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

The latest on 2013 DT Justin Manning of Dallas Kimball has him unable to attend J12 this weekend. This is a guy the staff really wants so it's a bit of depressing news. No word why he's having to miss out.

To follow up on this...it's a non-issue. Turns out the original plan for Davis was to attend the Alabama camp on Sunday and make a trip to Austin today and Tuesday. His coach, DeCarlos Holmes, was to accompany him to both. Turns out the only reason Davis was even in Tuscaloosa on Monday was due to the fact that Holmes had a family emergency on Sunday and had to leave the camp prematurely. Holmes has said he will talk to Bo Davis and likely set up something for next week. Either way, Holmes said Torshiro will be in Austin even if an assistant coach has to take him.

That's a great photo. Too bad Brown, Cole, Echols and Jones weren't able to be in it. Not sure why Bluiett is missing unless he was the one taking the photo.

    How did orientation go, Pop?

Geez, does anybody have more travel issues than recruits? I know things happen on long trips, but recruits run up against Murphy's Law than your average person.

I was hoping Torshiro and Agholor would be in Austin at the same time, but that will almost certainly not happen. If Torshiro delays his visit again, color me slightly concerned.

I forgot to talk yesterday about 2013 OL/DL Darius James of Killeen Harker Heights. He worked exclusively on the OL at J5 getting reps at center and guard. There are a lot of big guys in the upcoming class that can work both sides of the ball, so maybe the staff likes him as an interior OL prospect. I don't think this is any indication that he's definitely going to play on the OL in the future, but it's interesting that he didn't work on the DL at all despite being so talented at that position as well.

Is it too early for James to have a position preference? I hope we don't have to go down that road again. James' recruitment is shaping up to be a Texas v. OU battle per 247. James is listed at 6'5'' 319 per Rivals. Texas has traditionally had huge centers, but James would be the biggest in recent memory.

From the J5 quotes, the Harker Heights staff and James seem to really like Searels and Texas. HH High could be a new pipeline school.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Justin Manning and Isiah Golden as the priorities at DT for 2013. I know Manning won't make any of the summer camps, but his recruitment was expected to be uphill. Work your magic Bo.

Quote from ATH Daniel Brooks about his potential position at Texas. Doesn't sound like he would count towards the DB numbers.

"Basically, Texas would bring me as an athlete, try me at multiple positions and see where I'd fit. At Oklahoma, I've told them that (running back) is the position I want to play, but I can contribute at any position to help the program, help the football team out."
