We would definitely be taking military action if Mexico or Canada was becoming a puppet state for Russia, but it's still a re ed comparison. The countries that have joined / are considering joining NATO have free and fair elections (Ukraine, Finland, etc.)...the countries that remain loyal to Russia (Belarus) are authoritarian states where the people don't get to select their leader.
Putin is essentially mad because he's worried that the Ukrainian people will get to decide their own fate vs. be forced under the thumb of another pro-Russia dictator.

& because if he waits as he's been doing he'll have NATO on his border and then there is only the nuclear option. He goes now as he has he can delay that day perhaps indefinitely. He's warned Biden and the rest and if they take heed he'll get what he aimed for. If not, if they/NATO, U.S., get our backs up, then it's judgment day. Nobody likes to lose and lose face. Putin did and now he's dragging the aforementioned [/NATO, U.S.] thru that miserable ing experience>>>(we) don't like it and we're tempted, oh, daddy, are we ever tempted.
There was a U.S. General at the end of II., (name escapes me) who implored, absolutely begged Truman to let him head North with everything we had in the field and take out Russia.
& Truman considered it.

We had to find and kill Bin Laden. That's it. There was absolutely no reason to ever be there for 20 years, and if going into Afghanistan was really just about retribution for 9/11, then I'd love to hear an explanation about why Saudi Arabia didn't face any military action.
