I doubt they'll ever make anything, for Kinect anyways, that isn't aimed at a super casual soccer mom audience. In fact, as a peripheral for the 360, I think Kinect will be an utter failure and will bleed money from Microsoft.
But I'd bet MS is hedging on the use of Kinect's tech for applications other than gaming. I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing MS patented, camera-based motion controls popping up in laptop pcs, hdtv's, etc, within a year or so.
I myself will not be buying one. Not at $150 bucks. I like the idea of using it to navigate the dashboard, netflix, etc, but that 's not worth it at that price point.
