Never understood why the president's speech needs a response. He's the president, you cant do about any of what he says until election day.

Fundamentally it's good for alternate points of view to follow a presidential address. Ideally this would occur after any address. Even more ideally this is how opinion-based news would work.
Unfortunately both the SOTU and its responses have become a regurgitation of dumbed down talking points delivered at a 4th grade reading level for stupid people and people with the emotional self control of bipolar children. I haven't watched one in 10+ years and I don't plan to tonight.
Traditionally, the alternate point of view comes from the opposition party not the President's own party.
