Obama's Goals
- Make McCain get pissed off. Somehow make him blow his top without going over the top. Don't gamble too much with this.
-Cut the answers shorter and too the point. I like the fact that you know your shit, but the rest of the Americans don't.
-Score some zingers! Make the audience laugh if possible. Be as affiable as possible.
-Most importantly - if you do NONE of the above, do not burn an American flag, praise Alah, or take a dump on a manger set. Do this and you should be fine.
McCain's Goals
-Keep your temper under control. I don't care if Obama says your mother sucked his dick, don't lose it.
I don't know what else McCain needs to do really, and I'm biased anyway so someone else feel free.

McCain's goals:
- Keep focus on foreign policy, where your experience far outweighs Obama's.
- Try to keep 'POW' mentions under five.
- Throw in a 'well, there you go again' when Obama relates a canard you can easily disprove. The old guard 'pubs will love it.

I haven't.
Obama's remark about "not wanting his daughters to be punished with a baby" was a major strike against him in my mind.
However, I am not sold on McCain. His time as POW is to his credit, but that was then and I need to know what sort of man he is now.
I am really eager for these debates because the scripts are gone and I feel like this is my first real chance to get to know the candidates.
I am giving them both a blank slate. Someone needs to earn my vote.

I think McCain needs to address the current economic situation and show the public that he has a complete grasp of the issues and has solutions for them.
I think Obama needs to spend some time shoring up his perceived foreign policy experience deficit. It's a national security debate, but the economy may dominate.

I would think that Lehrer would try to get that out of McCain. The media kept mentioning McCain's reluctance to reveal his position today. I don't see how Lehrer wouldn't explore that issue.
I wonder what kind of pressure these moderators are under from their peers to ask the questions that are lingering in the media-at-large. In other words, if Lehrer doesn't get in to some of these issues, will Bob Schieffer or Tom Brokaw think less of him? And, if so, does Lehrer care enough to let it determine the questions he asks?

I'm also looking forward to the meta-analysis that we'll get from the pundits after the debates, asking questions like "So who will we be saying won tomorrow?" or "What moments from this debate will we be talking about tomorrow?" or "What narrative will we be discussing tomorrow?".
It throws me into a state of bewilderment and confusion every time they do that (and I guess I like being in a state of bewilderment and confusion).
I mean, isn't it an admission that they have no control over their analysis and merely repeat what others are saying.

Obama's remark about "not wanting his daughters to be punished with a baby" was a major strike against him in my mind.
Why? Firstly, he also said getting an STD for having unprotected sex at 15 or 16 is a punishment too.
But back to your comment. Why would he get a strike for stating the obvious? At 15 or 16, having a kid isn't a "present", unless you're a celebrity with enough money and nannies to birth 25 babies at once with no foreseeable problem, it's a result for being stupid and not using protection. No kid, unless warped by their environment says at 14 or 15 or 16 "Yay! I'm pregnant!"

Senator Obama's phrasing was poor to call the baby a punishment.
A baby outside of marriage is consequence of premarital sex- yes. It is the parents of the baby's fault; in no way is the baby to blame.
And never, according to my belief, should the baby be aborted in order to "fix" things.

I don't like the " moderator asking questions" format.
Every time the Senators start to get going arguing, it is time for the next question.
It feels too contained.
I would prefer if the moderator was there to reign in the discussion, when absolutely needed, but not lead it.
