Nah, I can't talk much shit to Thunderdan. He caught me the week I went on my bachelor party and left Stephen Drew, Brandon Morrow, and a few other injured players in my lineup all week. He beat me like I'm going to beat Alamo this week.

I figured there had to be a reason why he beat you after that battle we had.

Sorry HangBang, Manny is an Outfielder.

I didn't pay much attention to this league last year, so I'm not really sure if Whott was any better then. Because damn, his team is bad right now.

My team last year had, among others, BJ Upton, Evan Longoria(claimed off
waivers) Carlos Quentin(also off waivers), Hanley Ramirez, Dan Haren, John Lackey...and 6 mostly A-list closers incuding K-Rod, Jenks and Soria.
I was second or third most of the year after a slow start.

I did have somewha of second half fade partially due to the players slowing down, and also due to some key injuries(Longoria breaking his arm or leg)...

I deliberately drafted players this year for second half performance(hence the Fielder, Uggla pickups).

I mean you take a look at my team and the worst players are Berkman, Fielder, Uggla, Hardy, Dice K and Josh Beckett...

You think it's going to stay that way? I don't.

I mean I'd be benching both Fielder(he's showing signs of waking up though) and Berkman right now if it didn't leave me with a hole at 1st...you think about that for a second.

Also hasn't helped that every guy I've played this year has had a monster week in runs, RBI or HR...and usually wins as well.

Thunder Dan
05-05-2009, 08:51 AM
Or I guess you can ask Thunderdan. Alamo gave it to him pretty hard this past week.

My team hung in there. I played 3 days without my best player, and twice without my 2nd best (Utley and Manny). I was down 5/4 Saturday night, down 1 stolen base and Crawford stole 6 the next day.

Also, Jorge Cantu, a career journyman batted .433, with 4 Homers, 14 RBI, and 6 runs. That's never going to happen again. Alamo's easy-bake oven team had a career week and beat me, but the odds are in my favor, there will be no career years for Cantu and Crawford won't steal 8 bases in 2 games for Alamo all the time.

I drafted Teahen as my sleeper. He is my boy. It's like in the NFL when a coach hand picks his QB in the draft and brings him up to be good.

You are like Phil Jackson, you just roll in when someone else does all the leg work and just try to take the credit. Cantu is a bum journyman who is in the middle of a hot streak. Teahen is the future of MLB who can play 4 positions.

:frying:

I knew nothing about the current MLB before this season started.
If the draft would not have been in the middle of the night for me I would have been there myself to draft exactly as my computer did following the pre-draft rankings (hence I didn't care to ask for a different time for the drat as my picks would have been the same as my computer picked for me).

So actualy, you are just losing to a guy who knew nothing about baseball.
But damn I am picking it up fast and lovin' it!

I think I'mma gonna call you "lil' Cuban tooter" from now on.

to show my talent evaluation skills, I drafted Bannister in the draft- the Royals being the Royals sent him to start the season in the minors, they call him up to pitch and through 4 starts he is 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA. It's possible that I'm a better talent evaluator than anyone employed by the Kansas City Royals, which I know isn't saying much but still.

I had a bad weekend thats for sure. I sat a guy that went 8 scoreless innings and no walks, and another guy that gave up a run in 7 innings (Baker and Maine) because I was depending on Lester to give me a solid outing and thus win the WHIP and ERA categories.

Well, basically the reverse happened
-Lester sucked, giving up like 7 runs in the 5th inning costing me K's, WHIP and ERA all in one turn. I could have gone after K's if I knew he would have sucked balls
-Rollins is hitting below .200 and has 1 damn stolen base
-Eric got a lucky save yesterday by a non-closer to tie
-Rollins can't hit
-My Best player is a roider

I'm open to offers for that piece of shit Lester.

and if anyone wants a closer for a couple weeks you can have Hawkins- just let me know, I don't want a kings ransom for him

In 2007 Rollins stats

BA .296
HR 30
RBI 94
R: 139
SB: 41

2006 was close to 2007, 2008 was a slight drop off but he also missed time because of injury. It's not crazy to expect numbers in the same ballpark as 2007- which would warrant a #2 overall pick- just being a SS alone makes those stats crazy because SS is not a deep position in fantasy. Once Ramirez, Rollins, and Reyes are gone there is a significant drop off. Me picking Rollins 2nd expecting numbers similar to 2007 (.290, 20 Homers, 45 Steals) is about as rational as taking Evan Longoria coming off a rookie season banking on that season not being a fluke. I mean you took Josh Hamilton 2nd which might be worse than Rollins even knowing what I know now so I wouldn't beat your chest too hard.

Hamilton and Longoria had the same questions: could they repeat 2008 or was it a fluke? Longoria has proven himself, and Hamilton hasn't. Rollins atleast had 3-4 years of good numbers to justify the pick. AND PLUS, Hamilton is an outfielder a position of which there are 5-6 on each team, they come a dime a dozen.

I really wanted Hamilton after what he showed me last year. Yeah he is slumping and injured right now but Im sure he will bounce back. OF has 3 spots on our roster so why wouldnt someone rather have strong production out of the OF position. If you notice I have a lot of OF on my bench . Its like having 3 spots for WR in fantasy football. Im going to draft WR heavy. That was my strategy and guess what im in 2nd. Id rather go for the categories that I feel are more dominated by studs. Id pass up on steals to get RBI, RUNS, HR, and OBP. Same goes for pitching thats why I only have 3 closers. Wins, Strikeouts, ERA, and WHIP are more important. Yes I traded you Haren for a closer just so I can steal the save category from time to time.

No mather what way you look at it, I gained an ace. He's the major's best pitcher at the moment and I don't think he'll slide down all the way to just average any time soon.

I sold high on Yadier Molina, Orlando Hudson and Ryan Franklin and added Kevin Slowey just to make room.

- Molina was filling in for Soto in my squad this 1st part of the season because Soto is sucking after his injury. He'll be back soon. In the meanwhile I picked up Pierzynski to start

- Hudson was hardest to part ways with because of his excellent start of the season, but with the loss of Ramirez in L.A. he will suffer

- Franklin has grown into the closer spot for St. Louis, but it will be unlikely he'll be able to maintain his absurd numbers + I got 3 more closers still on my squad

Does this make sense from a guy who didn't know shit about MLB before the season began?

Oh yeah, on top of this I also gained 1 pitching game in my weekly matchup with EricB.

my team can suck my dick. They are a bunch of roiders, chokers, and underachievers. Jon Lester in perticular. Dude gets married then can't even give 5 solid innings. Scott Baker has a no hitter, and a 1 hitter this year going into the 6th inning and gives up over 5 runs in one inning in each of them. My team can blow me.

I'm hanging in on the ATRAIN optimism plan.

At this point, if I could get something useful out of Wang or Webb, I'd be pretty happy.

Still have some good 3rd-4th OF (Abreu, Dye, Damon, Matsui) that are available for relievers (not necessarily closers) or commensurate infield help.

No worries commish you cant give up, anything can and will happen. Look at this week a lot of the top teams either lost (LIKE ME) or barely got any points. It just proves how good some of these teams are even down on the bottom. Last year was a bit tougher since we had 2 more teams so you guys at the bottom can sneak up faster than you realize. I think thats why I like this league its very competitive. I think all of us in this league should go on to form a fantasy football league. Im sure all of us play that as well. It would be fun to keep the competitive edge we all have over to fantasy football. I know there are always tons of Spurstalk fantasy football leagues but I think Timvp should keep one reserved for us :). Just a suggestion.

See, that is why I have yet to play it. Because honestly, with only 16 games in a season, every game counts and I don't want to have to root for teams/players I dislike, particularly against my Cowboys. I think it would ruin Sundays for me.

With baseball, 162 games is a lot, so if someone on your fantasy teams lights up your real-life team or something like that, it is only 1/162, no biggie. Plus, I just enjoy baseball a lot more and know more about it. I actively follow the minor leagues and know the up-and-comers, whereas I pay zero attention to college fb.

There were even 2 guys on base which could have gotten him the lead in a 1-0 ballgame. First underachievement (Rollins), then Roids, then starts that get rescinded. Brett Cecil - Okay, the newest rookie pitcher to add in leagues deeper than 10 team mixed. Cecil may do a lot of nothing in this promotion, so I’d bench him for his first start. Why pickup a pitcher to bench, you ponder internally. Here’s the thing, and it’s the same reason I told you to grab Holland last week, if a rookie pitcher explodes on the scene, you want to own him. And a lot of times a rookie pitcher will come on like a comet burning brightly for a couple of starts. (Cueto’s first two starts last year: 13 1/3 IP, 18 Ks, 3 ER, 0 Walks) But, like a comet, his fire will probably burn out quickly when the league catches up to him. Then hot rookie callup pitcher will go into a correction period, lasting a few months. Now, while the whole world’s set ablaze with him, you can flip him for a junky closer. School’s out, Alice Cooper.

I've never heard of Razzball and don't go to fantasy sites for my research. I do my own research. The fact that I seem to track Razzball or they seem to track me means they are a very good above average site IMHO.

And as for Victor Martinez....my opinion on Victor Martinez was based entirely on drafting that piece of shit last year with a 3rd fucking round draft pick. It's was not my intent for it to be an objective analysis. Only to state that he does in fact, suck ass. 100%.

In any case, I don't blame you for being proud of the VMart pick seeing as how he's like the only guy you drafted that you haven't waived.

My favorite thing to do is watch how you clean up my waiver drops and drop players I suggest you drop.

Is there any player I suggested you drop that you haven't yet?

And how's that Volstadt pickup working out for you? Did Razzball also suggest dropping him just as he was about to suck like I did?

And as for Victor Martinez....my opinion on Victor Martinez was based entirely on drafting that piece of shit last year. 100%.

Well he is the best catcher in the league, and is holding his own as a first baseman for which I drafted him

My favorite thing to do is watch how you clean up my waiver drops and drop players I suggest you drop.

I don't even know what this means. I've picked up one guy that I know of who used to be on your squad and I only picked him up for 2 days to get a steal from him.

Is there any player I suggested you drop that you haven't yet?

Everyone knew I was just riding the Bonifacio wave while it lasted. I said I would drop him back in May. I don't think there is anyone else

And how's that Volstadt pickup working out for you? Did Razzball also suggest dropping him just as he was about to suck like I did?

I still have Volstad, and say what you want about him, he is still a better option than John Maine or whoever I dropped for him.

Um, you picked up 3 guys last week alone that were on my squad, 2 weeks ago.

Morgan
Sheffield
Volstadt.

John Maine being another guy that was on my squad. Thanks for the help.

I wonder if I should officially start the Volstadt waiver wire drop watch today or prorate it...

And I'll tell you why you will end up waiving him as well...becuase the only thing he provides consistently is whip and his whip aint all that. He's overachieving on K's, his ERA is shitty, and wins are always a crap shoot on a non-contending team. He helps slightly in one category does nothing in a couple of others, and hurts in one other. Many many better waiver alternatives out there.

Well he fits perfectly onto my team then because I need ERA. Buerle, Baker and Haren each give up the long ball and don't walk too many guys. They are prone to having high ERA and Whip. So looks like he fits perfectly onto my team.

and rip on me all you want for drafting Jim Thome, you drafted Oliver Perez in the 20th round. If you look at the guys I passed on it's all a bunch of guys on the waiver wire. The best player left after the 20th rounds are Bourn and Burhle and I got both of them

That is because Champions rely on their intuition as their 6th sense for success.

Do you also want to reassess your opinion on the Haren for Papelbon deal, I wouldn't have won a pitching category all year with Papelbon instead of Haren, now I hold my own in WHIP, K's and ERA.

Not at all...it was a horrible trade for you, totally killed your competitiveness in one category, every week. Even if it you only won saves half the time, your record would be about 500 right now.

I mean all you would have had to do to get competitive and nearly dominant in that category with him is just find one closer on the waiver wire....which was possible, because I myself have done it.

Absolutely horrible trade. Much easier to get starting pitching than it is closers.

I drafted a Hall of Famer in the 24th round- how can you even spin that into a bad thing?

and for the Haren thing you are forgetting 2 things

1)Papelbon isn't that great this year

2)I only had 1 closer to begin with, and looking at every week i only would have 1 one week with saves. If I didn't have Haren I would have lost most every week in WHIP and ERA

whottt
06-15-2009, 04:55 PM
I don't have Haren, the best starting pitcher on my staff is Ted Lilly who I seriously thought about waiving, I don't lose ERA and Whip every week.

Bad analogy. It's much easier to waiver yourself into contention in ERA and Whip than it is saves.

whottt
06-15-2009, 04:58 PM
You want to talk waiver wire?

The 10th best player in Yahoo right, now, the best 3rd baseman, is Mark Reynolds who I claimed off the waiver wire.

The second best SS is Ben Zo, who I also claimed off the waiver wire.

Those are what you call waiver wire pickups.

Was it entirely skill that I got those players and they are top 2 at their positions? No...it's extremely lucky, but that I am competitive at those positions is not...for you can always find break out position players and SP....

You cannot do that with closers.

Attempting to build a closing staff off the waiver wire is like to trying to find a good looking woman in Cleveland...

Unless you go for the Sharpei look, you are in for a frustrating, disappointing and frankly ugly ass time.

Bad move on your part.

That shit happens to Haren and Cliff Lee all the time. I think it's happened 3 times to Lee and twice to Haren so far this year. One of the Haren ones was he left in the 7th with a 6 run lead, only giving up a run, and the bullpen gave up 6 in the 9th.

I'll tell you what I'm sick of is I swear, every week guys have their best outing vs. me. You found a glitch in the rules and you use(d) it to your advantage (now and than).

Furthermore we got the 3rd 10-0 beat down of the season and this time Boogie Woogie was the victim on the hands of Bashers.

Thunder Dan

I'm in an ever search of my last man in the rotation. Also it's not a glitch in the rules as I've found that doing the adding pitchers thing costs you, in this case I would have won ERA, and whip would have been neck and neck.

Also, why does it matter how many roster moves I make? It's not like I'm dropping and picking up all stars. If I drop a player you all are free to pick him up. I add and drop depending on what I need, that's being a great GM. Some weeks I'm short pitching and some weeks I can carry more position players. And again, the adding pitching thing doesn't work bc you throw 2 categories to get one becuase you are selecting trash pitchers to pitch for you. I was hoping to bait you in to picking one up to bring me closer in those categories.

If I didn't add Kawakami, Cahill, Correia or Blanton...

My team ERA last week would have been 2.8125 (67.2 IP, 21 ERs)

My WHIP would have been 1.29

If you count adding Banniester for Richmond being put on the DL the stats would be:

ERA: 2.82 (adding Bannister's 6.0IP and 2ER)
WHIP: 1.28.67

So I would have beaten you either way.

I will make the playoffs- haven't lost in 6 weeks.

B.J. Ryan got the closers role taken away from him, he sucks. They outright released him. They didn't even ask for a bag or balls or a couple of bats, they just said see ya. That's how bad he is. He was signed by the Cubs, who have 2 guys behind their closer already and he shouldn't even worry about that because he will be playing in Iowa and not in Chicago.

All I'm saying is that it won't be GM of the Year move- as that move has already been made: Haren for Papelbon. You traded the house away for Grenkie who sucks now, as I have the best pitcher in the game. You can't claim GM move of the year when I have already made it

GM move of the year was Crawford for Quentin.

I can't really argue with that. Atrain had a man crush on Quentin and a week later he was horse glue.

OK, I see I was a little too optimistic this time.
Let's get a Yankee on my roster for the 1st time this season.

Just like last year he will have a hell of a 2nd half. I got him for my second half surge. Losing 4 guys to the DL in the beginning and I was still on top. You and Alamo are going to regret talking about the Q.

Nothing negative from me about the Q bro.
I know what he was doing before he got injured.

By the way, what's the use of tanking in a non-keeper league (Boogie Woogie's Nights)? Wouldn't the dough be better spend on Mandy?

He's not tanking, he just doesn't like day to day managing. He joined because we were short owners.

Bashers I don't know how the hell I took 5, especially since my pitching strategy didn't work worth a flip except in k's. Glad I got 5 though, it could have been a lot worse.

You guys were the Bashers on Saturday and Sunday. My guys tried to keep up but they were no match. You beating me by one percentage point in the OPB hurt. I hate losing categories like that.

no problem. I don't need him, Jones will be fine for a couple weeks then Hunter will be back. I have a log jam at my corners.

That's weird too...I didn't really think I had a chance at beating you in HR, probably your best offensive category, especially when I had Berkman on the DL. I was going for steals, probably my best offensive category, and I wound up losing steals and winning HR instead. Go figure...

If it makes you feel any better...there was no way you should have won W this week. I started about 10 more pitchers than you did and still ended up losing by 1. I had horrible luck in pitching this week. Even my k total was piss poor considering how many pitchers I started.

Don't worry, we will. He'll make a fine bench warmer to close out the season with.

Our self proclaimed GM of the year just missed 3 homers from McCutchen as he was benched.

Cost you 2 points Hanger!
Dude, McCutchen ranks 62 this month and you put him on the bench???
