Man oh man, is that Roja just absolutely delicious. Scott - I know I said it at Freetail, but there are some outstanding beers. It was one of my roomie's birthdays last night, and we had a little tasting - the Roja, a Bat Rastard, Cantillon 1900 Grand Cru, Alaskan Smoked Porter, and a Port/De Proef Brewerij collaboration. We had the Roja first and everyone raved about it. Preferred it to the draft version, but I did have a taste of Figg Puddin' a couple minutes before I had it at Freetail and it messed with my palate a bit. The fruit stands out in the finish in the bottle for sure.

Thanks man! I'm really happy with the way the Roja came out. I had our assistant brewer let me know when the keg was going to kick so I could get the last serving.
I think I may drop by Draught House tomorrow (Wednesday) night. Maybe I'll bump into you guys there.

went to the ranger creek brewery this past weekend and man they make some damn good beer... i only tried the mesquite smoked porter there but i've have a couple others at a friends house. if you get a chance, goto their open house they have monthly. $5 for a pint glass and 3 pints of beer during their open house.

Koriwhat I went on that same tour a few weeks ago :) For some reason I kept forgetting to post about it. My hubby is a homebrewer so I'm pretty familiar with that whole process, but the distillery side was new to me. Not a whiskey drinker, but I'll definitely try theirs when it's ready. On the beer side, I had La Bestia which was okay. I've never been a fan of porters but I really did enjoy that Mesquite Smoked Porter---I don't like a lingering aftertaste and that one finished up real quick and clean.

Everyone should try to go to a tour/open house. We went as a group with a homebrewers club, but got to meet a lot of other people. The owners are great and made it a very enjoyable afternoon.

Yeah. That's what a lot of people commented about it. I didn't know if there was more than one "Duvel" beer so I just left it.

Not really. I have a pretty limited beer palate; when i go to a brewpub or microbrew I always ask for the "the lightest beer you make". At Freetail that is La Rubia I think. It's good :)

I haven't had a Shiner seasonal since that Smokehouse Ale they had a year or two ago. I don't mind smoky flavor but this was overdone mesquite.

I think their 3 limit only applies to beers over a certain ABV... 7 or 8% IIRC.
Not sure if that's changed since that incident with the drunk driver killing that cop. I actually dated the waitress who served him believe it or not. We spent this last New Years in New York.
And this bad boy hit the shelves recently:

I used to drink that occasionally about 5-6 years ago. It was expensive and it took a year to make the perfect pour--or else the shit would be all foam. High alcohol content, but not much else to offer.
I thought the flavor actually obscured the alcohol quite well. You can tell it had a kick, but the alcohol really didn't overpower the beer. If the banana was toned down a little I would definitely drink it more.

I would have no problem in purchasing a 4 pack. It would just suck to have to go to Austin. Maybe I can pressure the san antonio specs into purchasing some. I work in windcrest so it isn't that far from my job.

If I like it, it's good to know that it's at the Flying Saucer. I live on Fred and Callaghan, about 3 minutes from I10. Can be at Huebner in 10 minutes. My ex wife lives on Woodstone so I could probably stop by for a drink there after having to visit to pick up my child support check.

My "tasted beers" list from the saucer (this one isn't up to date... it's short about 9 beers). I used to date one of the servers and I was constantly there so I was able to put up pretty good numbers in a short amount of time. Broke up, didn't go back for a couple months then picked back up again. A few of these she added without me buying them but mostly the liquid piss like miller lite and coors light. I'm about 75 away from getting a plate on the wall.

Is Kellerweis just a rebranding of their previous beer that was called Sierra Nevada Wheat? I wasn't a fan at all of that and thus have never picked up the Kellerweis. I'm an enormous fan of their Pale Ale, Torpedo, Stout, Porter, and most of all the Bigfoot Ale though. it got stuck in fermentation, if you are referring to the beer. Budweiser/InBev did threaten to stop advertising on Discover entirely to stop them airing it, though. I only found out when I saw a Bourdain tweet about it a few months ago. Same company produces both shows. It was lame.

I love their Easy Street wheat. At least, I did 5 years ago when I had it last.
Easy Street was OK. I'm a lover of a good wheat beer and while it wasn't bad it was unexceptional for me. Not bad, just not outstanding in any way, IMO.

I have tried several, and haven't tasted any that I like. I do however have two 22 oz. bottles of Black Butte XXI (http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/recipe/black-butte-xxii-clone). The bottles say "best after 10/17/10." They also say "21st Birthday Reserve." Deschutes Brewery was founded in 1988. I bought them about two years ago. Perhaps such a brew needs to be properly aged. They are 11%. Just because I have never tasted one I liked, doesn't mean I am not willing to give them a chance.
I can handle the high gravity. Tell me, how long is such a thing aged? Did you know that the minimum aging for such a brew is commonly a year? I am a former home brewer and have made brews as high as 13.5%. Even though it was Mead rather than beer. Brewing mead is like giving birth. It takes nine months to brew it, then another year to age it. My only attempt at a barley wine was just over 8% and it was the only brew I made I didn't like. Maybe if I let ut age, things would have been different. My favorite, I call Onyx Supreme. It's a 7.5% dark (black) stout. My second favorite I make I call, "Cran Razz," a 6.5% Cranberry Raspberry Hefe-weisen. At times I think about brewing again, but I stopped when I discovered the Deschutes Brewery company, because I could buy Obsidian Stout (http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/brew/obsidian-stout), a 6.4% stout which was every bit as good as my own. Just 1.1% less alcohol. I tell you, at their brew pub, it is heaven on nitro tap.
I simply have not tasted a barley wine, yet, that I appreciated. I am hopeful that this Black butte XXI will be good when I finally open it.
Look asshole. I lived in Germany for six years. Can you claim the same?

I started about 5 years ago, and lived in Germany for three. Germany is handicapped by their Reinheitsgebot - your Cran Razz would not be considered beer according to it. Aging depends entirely on the brewer's preference. For example, Freetail brewed their La Muerta Stout on 10/5/11 and released it 11/1/11.
I had the Black Butte XXIII on tap about 6 weeks ago, it was great. I also am a big fan of Abyss, and hopefully will be able to get a hold of a bottle of Dissident this year. Their Stoic Quad was also quite tasty. My local pub owner has a very good relationship with Deschutes, we get nearly all of their seasonal releases.

Not really similar to either, really. Brooklyn is an Impy Stout with a pretty distinct sweetness. Rogue's are decidedly hoppier (especially Shakespeare) in addition to not being Impy's.

They are (in all likelihood) freeze distilled, which is a controversial (and in many cases illegal) method of boosting alcohol content in beer. I've never been a fan of the mega-huge beers because they begin to resemble spirits and I just don't like spirits. But to each their own.

Rogue's Chocolate Stout has the best taste, because the Chocolate is undeniable, but the alcohol content is rather low, so you get the taste more than anything else... which is great, unless you're like me and you love your alcohol.
Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout? IMO, totally different flavor, but it's well balanced..
